Pocket Picking. —Phillippa Terrell, aged ten years, pleaded “ G-uilty ” to having stolen a handkerchief, and a purse containing 11s, from the pocket of Annie Mullins, at the Exhibition on Friday last. The aot had been noticed, and she was shortly afterwards arrested, whan the purse was found rolled up in the handkerchief, and pinnod underneath her frock. She had spent all but 2a 101 in trinkets, which were found on her. Her grandmother, who was present, stated that the mother of the girl was confined by illness to her bed. Prisoner was one of her nine children. The father was a musician, at present travelling Prisoner was very-wild, and quite beyond her mother’s control. Sergeant Mason said the family wore perfectly respectable, the child having no apparent cxcuie for her present offence, The Magistrate said the only thing that seemed fit under the circumstances would be to send her to Burnham. The grandmother made an affecting appeal to be allowed to take the child home, promising to carefully watch her in future, Mr Ollivier, however, said that, in mercy to the child and her relatives, he felt bound to take the course he had indicated. If at a future time it wuc ahowu that she was behaving herself well, the Bench would consider any application made for her discharge. She was ordered to be sent to Burnham School for fire years, to bo brought up as a Wesleyan. Chaeqis ok Vageancy. —John Jones, a respoclablo-lookicg young man, was charged with having no lawful visible means of support. Sergeant Mason said he had bear, found the previous night at the Eihibitioi sleeping in an empty case. On enquiry, it had been found that prisoner was out of work, but there was nothing in hia case to warrant him being further punished. Prisoner was discharged, with a recommendation to go and seek for work. Lunacy peom Dbxkk —For a first offeree of this kind, a man, who had been undergoing medical treatment, was ordered to pay 4j 6d for his maintenance while iu gaol, or in default to bo imprisoned for forty-eight hours.
