Under the old Act they were only required to keep lights tiil eleven oVock. The effect cf the new regulation has been that during the past week or more the great majority who did aot break the law have had lights burning before their doors during nights on which for the meet part of the ti-ue there has been brilliant moonlight.

1.0.0.F..M.U.—Tb0 half-yearly meeting of the Loyal Papanui Lodge was held on June ; 30tb, when the following officers were electee to fulfil the various offices: —H.G.Bro, H. H. Godfrey; Y.G, Bro. H. Morgan ; -t »•, Bro. John McKay. The newly-elected officers were installed by Prov. G.M. Foster. After some routine bniinesa the Lodge was 'then closed by the N.G. AGP.—A half-yearly meeting of die 'Court Pride of Richmond Lodge was held in ■the Methodist Chapel, Richmond, on Tuesday evening, 4th inst., when the following officers for the ensuing year were duly elected, viz, Bro. Richardson, O.R; Bro. Brown, Bro. Raily, S.W.; 80. Wills, J.W., Bro. Waddington, S B.; Bro. Orr, J.B. Dr. Bussell was re-eleoted medical officer. The meeting was well attended, and we are glad to be able to report that the number of members have considerably increased since the last half-yearly meeting. JET alp Holiday.—A number of the leading merchant* and tradespeople of the city intend giving a half-holiday to their employee® on Thuieiay nest, the day being set apart for the Ohristohnich Hunt Club Steeplechases; these establishments consequently will be closed, daring the afternoon of that day. _ Christchurch Police Fokob.—-An impression having gained ground that additional men were being sent down from Wellington, it may bo as well to mention that, out of the twelve policemen provided specially for Exhibition work, six have been ternporarily added to tbe Christchurch force. Lyitkltov Boeottsh School.—A meetiug of the committee of this school was held on Friday night. Present—'The H-ev. J. Townsend (chairman), and Messrs Neville, Turner, Joyce, and Webb. A letter was read from tt c Board of Education, appointing Mr Polo to the third assistant mastership of the tohool. The committee had recommended a Mr Marshall, but he whs ineligible, not being on the list of certificated teachers. It was stated that the new assistant should commence his duties at once, the head master having repoitsd that this wan exceedingly necessary. The work of remedying the overflow of water existing in the school playground was left in the hands of the chairman to arrange, he to consult with Mr Bowden, the foreman of works for the borough, It was the hope of the committee that the Education Board would defray the cost of putting in the drains or channels to carry off the water, and it was declared that unless the work be speedily carrieu out it would be quite impt s.ible for the children to make u*a of the playground at all. An examination that had been recently made by excavating near the spot at which the water oozed out wont to show that the theory put forth as to the water coming up from the shingle bed of a now bidden gully was about right. The Opinion was exp-essed that tbo loose slates upon the roof ot the school should be looked to at 'the earliest possible moment. After passing some accounts the meeting adjourned. Lowbb Beahcoxe School. —Owing to the repairs to the school building not being completed, this school will not reopen until Monday, the 17th instant, when the lately appointed head master, Mr J. J. Patterson, late of the Normal School, will be in charge. The committee intend to give the school festival towards the end of the month or the beginning of August. Dauhtlesb Lodge, No. 7, 1.0.G.T. Last evening a public meeting was held in connection with the above lodge in the Templar Hall, Worcester street. MrJ. T. Smith, G W C.T. of New Zsaland, presided, and there was a capital attendance of the public. Professor Fraser delivered a most instructive lecture on “ The Injurious Effect# of Alcohol on the Human System,” illustrated by numerous diagram#. The lecture was I listened to with close attention, and the Professor was warmly applauded at its close, Boagsjwere given by Miss He Gcsaiok and Mr J. Francis, a vocal duet by Misses Webber and Hid field, duet (piano) by Misses Steven and Ls Qassick, and a recitation by Miss Ha: risen. Very hearty votes of thanks were then passed to Professor Fraser and those who had eo kindly Resided in making the meeting a success, and to the ohair, and the meeting closed. Fr.xENDS OF Labor.—Tha twelfth halfyearly meeting of the above loan and investment society takes place on Monday evening next at the Market Hotel.

Sixteen shareholders were present. Beitisk and Foreign Bible Society.— The annual public meeting of the Canterbury auxiliary of the above society will bs hold on Tuesday, at St John’s schoolroom, when the Primate will preside. Amongst the speakers will be Bishop Sergeant and the Eev. U. B. Macartney.
Tbamwat Extension, —Tho opening of the tramway line to Woolston was celebrated yesterday. Shortly after 1 p.m. a tram, consisting of engine and two car a, loft Catfiedral Square, conveying a number of gentleman, including the Mayors of Christchurch, Sydenham, and St. Albans, M. Joubert, the directors of tha Tram ray Company, and a number of gentlemen who had been invited by tho residents of Woolston to celebrate the event after the usual manner of Englishmen, viz., bv a spread, On arriving at the township it was seen that tho residents had laid themselves out to welcome their guests. A string of flags stretched across tho road, bearing in tho centre tho word “ Welcome.” The spread, which was catered for by Mr Piper, was laid in the Oddfellows' Sail, and about one hue -eel gentlemen eat down. The chair was occupied by Mr John Ollivier, who was supported by hia Worship the Mayor of Christchurch and the Mayor of ill". Albaca. After luncheon the Chairman gave the toast of “ The Queen and Royal Family,” which vras followed by that of “ His Excellent)/ the Governor and both Houses of Pav-lia-mant,” coupled with the name of tho Hon. J. T. Paaoook, who responded on behalf of the members of both Houses. Mr J. T. Fisher also responded. Tho other toasts given were —“ Success to the Woo'6ton Tramway Extension,” responded to by Mr W. Pratt ; “ Prosperity to Woolston Industries,” proposed by M. Joubert and responded to by Mr K. Allan ; “ The Hcathcoto Road Board,” lesponded to by Mr F. Jones ; “Tho Visitors,” responded to by tho Mayor of Christchurch and M. Joubert; “ Tho Press,” responded to by Messrs Plunkett and Hart; “ The Chairman,” responded to by Mr ©llivier; “The Committee of Reception,” responded to by Mr John Smith ; and “ The Radios,” responded to by Mr F. Jones. A most enjoyable and pleasant afternoon was *pent, and tho visitors returned home by the (t p.m. tram. Oranoeism.—The anniversary of the 12th July will bo celebrated on Wednesday next by a tea, concert, and ball, in the Hall. The brethren will attend divine service tomorrow at St. John** Church, meeting at x p.m. Nobth Canterbury Coursing Club.— The match for all-aged dogs was concluded yesterday between Supplejack and Harewood, which resulted in favor of the latter, who ran the deciding course against Mr A. Piper’s Vashti, which won the first prize of tbe stakes.
