In the Supreme Court, to-day, James William Ellis, aged twenty-two, was, without hesitation, convicted of a moot brutal criminal assault on Mary Eliza O’Connor, aged eleven years, at Grey town. Judge Richmond, in passing sentence said : —“You have been convicted on the clearest evidence of ono of the most brutal cases I have ever had to deal wiih as a criminal Judge. I must make you an example. Your crime is one that disgraces human nature. It is the crime of the brute, and you must receive the punishment of a brute. The judgment of the Court upon you is that you be kept in penal servitude in the colony of Now Zealand for the term of twelve years, and further, that you be twice whipped, receiving at each whipping thirty strokes with the instrument commonly called the “ out-o’-niue-tails.” The enquiry in the loss of the Westport is still proceeding. The evidence to-day was not important. A gas explosion occurred iu the Custom House this morning. The messenger, named

A twenty-five pound salmon was seen to jump to-day beneath a bridge over Bed Jack’s Creek, The splash started the horse of the party who observed the fish. A fisherman named Kirdnoas borrowed a boat for fishing on Waihola Lake, The boat has been found, but nothing since has been heard of Kirdness, who is supposed to have f lien overboard.

Agnes Philips was sentenced to fourteen days for stealing a shawl from a hawker, while exhibiting his goods to her. William Manderson was arrested at the Bluff with £39 on him, charged with wife desertion. When brought up it was arranged ho should depoait £l9 10a, and pay 10s per week.

At the Benevolent Asylum inquiry the evidence wos nearly all favorable to the manager, Mr Quin. Ho stated that he had been eleven and a half years in tha police, and seven jours a Provincial Government servant. When he left the force ho was senior first-class sergeant, and during his service was only reprimanded once, tho matter being a very trivial one. He became master of the institution in 1874,
