A FEW EXCELLENT CROSSES.

In an article on general poultry raising the “Mark liana Express” remarks that i£ a choice table fowl only is wanted a game cock mated with some large vigorous Dorking hers will give the desired result. The chickens will bo hardy, precocious, small boned and meaty. If living four's are wanted a good cross is the Brabm& Djiking—use Dorking hens and a Brahma cook. Another excellent cross for this purpose is a silver spangled Hamburg cook on Brahma hens. This blood adds largely to the egg-producing powers of the Brahmas, and the meat is equally good. The chicks grow fast, are active and finally make good sitters. Other crosses may bo made b®tween the Black Hamburg, the Houdan, the Creveccour, the Minorca, the Plymouth Book, the Scotch Grey, and the Andalusian, taking care not to mate two, especially laying breeds, together at the meat is not improved. Thus the Black Hamburg, the Minorca, and the Andalusian are absolutely egg producers of high merit, their edible properties being poor beside some of the others j on the other hand, the other named breeds are superior as table fowls, and are much larger, and the two birds somewhat resembling each other, the Bock ’and the Scotch Grey, both sit well—the Oreve and the Houdan, which are French fowls, not sitting at all. Thus there is ample material for manufacturing any sort of fowl required, but in the process some common sense and perseverance are required, and it is not sufficient to just attempt the first year, and then relapse into the old plan of in-breeding.
