NEW ZEALAND.

[PBB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, July 3. The wreckage recently reported at Motonau, near Elaxbourne, has been ascertained to be that of a small wooden vessel, not that of any of the New Zealand Shipping Company’s 11 iet. Where the railway accident occurred on Saturday night there is a sharp curve, and the grade is lin 37. Several trucks left the mils at the same place some months ago. The two tracks which went over were about the centre of the train. Two other trucks were palled off the rails, but not over the embankment, before the coupling gave way, Wm.Eattray, a Government clerk, charged with smbezslement, bat been remanded to Friday. The criminal sessions of the Supremo Court commenced to-day, before Judge Richmond. His Honor, in charging the Grand Jury, said there were only six oases on the present list, und he would be able to congratulate them on the shortness of the calendar, but unfortunately it contained one charge of brutal offence, with which class we were only too familiar in this group of the colonies, and to which he need not further allude. The Legislature of this colony had seen fit to increase the neverity of punishment awarded to this class of offence beyond that which was in use in England, though we had as yet not resorted to that in vogue in New South WaltJ, wlieio It was punishable with death. Ho wished lie could say that he thought tho increase in the severity of the law had been attended by a diminution in the frequency of crime. Ho could not ray that this was ec, however, for these offence still continued, and were far too frequent. His Honor added that these first days of criminal sessions, he must confess, seemed to him like days of sackcloth ard aches, in which they usually had to deplore the prevalence of crime, and also, he might say, the impotence of mere law to suppress it.

Several chains of fencing were blown down, and two haystacks and a strawstack demolished. Several trees were torn up by tho roo‘s, and other damage done in the neighborhood. The galo on Saturday night and Snnioy evening was felt severely here. The chimney of a house occupied by the engineer of the Harbor Works was blown down, and the roof of an adjoining house uncovered. The fury of the wind and sea was at times terriHc, and the force of water tremendous, but the breikwater withstood it all, which show* the substantiality of the structure. DUNEDIN. July 3.
