liicrofsiHQ Act.—Attention is drawn to an auvertisement in another oolnmn, from wbioh it will be seen that the resolution* ngreed to at the Temperance Conference re the proposed amendments to the present Lioeckiog Act, will be submitted to a public meeting in the Templar Hall on Monday evening. A New Local Iwdttstby.—Messrs J. Ballartyne and Co., of Dunstable House, havo_ juat_ started a new industry in connection with their extensive business. This is the pjoiuction of hats and caps on the premises. The arrangements made are exceedingly complete, and the style and finish of the articles turrei out very oredit. able. Messrs Ballantvne and Co. have for sorao years past largely imported these articles, but now, in a very short time, it is moro than probable that the locally made will entirely siupersede the imported. Bubnham iNDtrSTBrAi, School. This afternoon the braes band, twenty-one strong, under the supsrvition of the master, Mr S. G. MaddiEOa, marched to the Ohristohuroh Hospital, where they played, led by the conductor, Mr C. H. Bowles. The opening pioce, Bound's valoe " Daybreak," was given in good taste and time, and was listened to by nearly a hundred people oallected on the Hospital parterre and on the footbridge spaunimr the river. Thk Exhibition.—Blondin gave a performance yoiterday afternoon, when he went through his various feats. la the evening an attempt was made to give a limelight oosmoramio show in the concert hall. The audienoe with commendable patitneo sat for an hour whilst the opjrator vainly endeavored to show more on the sheet than a faint resemblance of the moon in a fog. Ultimately some views were uhown, but they were exceedingly tame, about the stamp of those exhibited to Sunday sohool children, and very shy at that. It is due to the promoters to say that they were not aware of the calibre of the entertainment, whioh was certainly not up to the usual mark of enfcertainmonfs at the Exhibition. Tan Missing- Mak Ahdbbson:—Another searoh party is being organised to seek for the body of M:r A. Anderson, who was recently lost in the neighborhood of Pudding Hill. Though every effort has been made to discover the remains of Mr Anderson, np to the present no trace of the body has been found. Foitbth op July Cblbbbatioh.—Mr A. G. Howlaud, determined that the celebration of the " Glorious Fourth " shall not pass unnoticed, will give his annual feast of Boston pork and beans, with Bourbon, on Tuesday next, to the workmen in his factory and ueveral American citizens and friends. ' Wormhs Mien's Political Assooia-Xiow.-An ordinary meeting of the members of the above association was held lost, evening, in the jFreethcughfi Hall, Worcester street; Mr J. Crowley, president, in the chair. Mr W. H. Wynn Williams, M.H.8., wrote, stating that he would look after the interests of the working olasn6B in the General Assentbly, as regarded the Employers. Wlity Bill, but at the sa,me time he should tatce tare that the intereits of other olaar.es of society were respected. Messrs J. \J ets > M.H.8., P. Cunningham, and 0. P. Eulbert, wrote, enclosing honorary members fee of £1 Is eaoh, Mr Ivcas stating he would do all in his power to promote the welfare of the association, whilst Mr Cunningham expressed Ms disapproval of some of the ruler. Be Sir O. Grey's Prevention of Purchase of Votes BUI, Mr Crowley contended that the latter ueotion of elausa 2 contradicted the rest of the Bill. It was agreed t lat the local msmhers be asked to support the Bill. Mr J. Holmes* Distress Act BUI was then considered. Dissuasion ensued, the chairman terming it a lawyer's Bill; others called it limply ridiculous, and not worthy of its promoter. The vagueness of clause a■ was also pointed out. It was reaolvsd, by a majority of one—" That the Bill be approved." The Law Practitioners BUI was aext considered, and it wau contended, that a lawyer should receive no mere protection against a competent outsider conducting a case in Court than an artisan should rooeive, and that as no lees than fortyeevca solicitors wero qualified to practice in a small city like Chriatchurch, the profession was a profitable one and could stded alone, and it was naanimou?!/ agreed thit the Canterbury members be" askc-d to support the samo in its passive through the Houio. It was rwsolved to hold a ir.teling of the association in the Stanmore district at an early date. The association then adjourned.
