CHRISTOHURCH. JTJLT 1. [Before J. Ollivier, Esq , R.M.] DBrjNKBNNB.ss.—Tho3. Watch, arrested at the rail'./ay, was fioed 10s for being_druz>k and £1 for committing a nuisance there, in default to bo imprisoned for three days. This Knife.—P. Darrough was charged with attempting to stab. He pleaded guilty. J. B. Hodges, barman at the Langham Hotel, stated that while etanding at the door of tho hotel tho previous night, the prisoner came up end asked his nam-J. Witness refused to give it, when prisoner made a blow at him with an open knife, wfcieh passed o'.ose to witness' head. Prisoner made a statement. Ho said that he had been assaulted end thrown out of the bar by the prosecutor otsrKer in the evening. He had returned, when drunk, with the intention of getting prosecutor'* name for the purpose of summonsing him. Ho did not remember what followed. Ho was sontouced to be imprisoned for one month, and to be kept at hard labor. Fobc-sbx akd UTxaaixa.—Wm. Soppett was charged with forging and uttering a oheque for £l3 18?, drawn on the Bank of New South Wales at Chriatohurch. W. H. Kiddey de loaod that on June 24th prisoner was at tha Star and Garter, the hotel of which witness is the ilicansee. He borrowed 15s from witness on the representation that ho had been working for Mr Rosewarne at Lincoln, and wanted the money to pay hie furs to that place where ho woe going to got his wages. On the Monday following he brought tie casque in question and handed it to witucs?, it purported to be signed by W. Bosowarue and was post-dated, he wished it to be kept till it matured. Witneaß then lent him £2. Prisoner went away and later on returned, saying he had m*de a§purohase at BallaHtyna's, but the parcel could not be sent after him, as he had forgotten the naina of tho hotel. He borrowed £2 more, and witness had not seen him again till arreEted. Witness presented tho cheque at tho Bank on June 29th, the day of its supposed maturity, and payment was refused on the ground that the signature was unlike. W. H. Ottawsy, proprietor of the Kendal boarding house, Peterborough street, depcs2d to supplying prisoner with the blank of the cheque produced, together with the writing materials, on June 26ih. Wm. Rosawarne, lessee of Moffat's mill at Lincoln, deposed that prisoner had been employed by him as bookkeeper up to May 6th. While in that capacity, it was part of his duty to write out cheques for witness to sign. Witness had not authorised him to write in the body of, or sign the oheque. He reoognised tho writing on the cheque as that of the prisoner. Thos. Neil, detective, deposed to arresting prisoner on June 29 th. When told the oharge, he said he did not understand it.
