COMMERCIAL.

An absence of activity still continues to be a leading feature in the state of our markets. This is doubtless in a measure owing to tho fact that this period is selected by several bonces for the purposes of stock taking, so that any sales effected may be said to bo of a clearing off nature or for actual requirements. The long absence c( shipping from London has at length been relieved by the arrival of the Valentin. Several vessels are still over due and occasion some inconvenience from the wane of several seasonable lines contained therein, file and stout have not had much attention, except for inferior lots, which have tempted buyers on account of low quotations. Sherry of medium quality being rarher scarce bus had enquiry, while port wine has but little attention. A considerable business has been done in champagne of tho best qualities only ; the rates quoted hero being lower than tho advance required by shipper; having caused some little speculation, which must lead to improved quotations shortly, as stocks are exceedingly moderate. and shipments to arrive cost a considerable advance on previous rates, Scotch whiskey of prime quality continues in favor. Brandy, of medium sorts chiefly, has had smsll sales, othir sorts are neglected. Old tom, both bulk and care, have had improved bu-ioess: stocks of the latter, of small contents, being in short supply. Teas have not had much business, except in clearing out lots, in which a small trade has brea done at prices greatly in favor of buyers. Sugars have had some little atteu* iron; advices report the Mauritius markets as having been cleared out, in which case present shipments just to hand will be tho last for several mouths, so improved rates may bo oxpectel, as stocks are not Salt, both fiuo and coarse, has had considerable business ; the demand for tho latter being unusually brisk ; stocks, however, are ample, so quotations are not likely to advance. Kerosene, on account o? excessive supplies, is being forced off at low rates, but without leading to much business. But little has been doing in lash, salmon continues scarce at 8s 6d, sardines are a shade easier, but still higher than usual. Tobaccos, on account of recent supplies, have hsd a trifling business at a reduction from previona ratos for twist and nailrod; fancy sorts still maintain high prices, and are even then with difficulty secured. Fencing wire has had a brisk business at good rates ; but galvanised iron on account of large supplies fails to find much business, although quotations are in favor of buyers.
