CANTERBURY COLLEGE
A meeting of the Board of Governors wag held yesterday. There wore present—Tho Primate, Bov. 0. Fraser, Dr. Coward, Messrs W. Beeves, H. P. Lance, R. Bsetham, li. W. Feredsy, F. de O, Malot, W, T. W. Hamilton, T. W. Maude, J. D. Eoys, H. J. Tancrcd, H, B. Webb, and E. Wakefield.
On the motion of the Primate Mr F. ds 0 Malet took the chair.
The report of the committee of Sohool of Agriculture was read as follows : “ The committee recommends the Board to accept the resignation of Mr T. Eirk, and to authorise the committee to invite applications for the office of lecturer on natural -science.” The Chairman said that the committee in order to save time had called for applications for the pest vacated by Mr Eirk, whose services the committee were very sorry to loss.
The Chairman moved—" That the report of the committee bo adopted."
Mr Beeves seconded the motion. In answer to Mr Fereday, The Chairman said that the committee had fully considered the question of providing house accommodation fur Mr Eiik. The Board then went into committee on (he report. After some discussion, the Board resumed.
The Chairman reported that tho following resolution had been adopted in committee: — “ That the report of the Agricultural Sohool foe referred back to that committee, with a view to their making arrangements for the retention of the services of Mr Eirk, and failing such arrangement, they be authorised to accept Hr Eirk’s resignation, and to advertise for another lecturer.’’
The report of the Estates committee was read and adopted. The report of the Collage committee was read, aa follows : (I) The committee recommend tho Board to grant a request from Mr Gray, contained in bis letter dated April 21st, viz., that he bo allowed to augment hie salary by private analytical
work. (2) The committee lays before iho Board a letter from Professor Bickerton, dated June 15th, asking permission to give some courses of cheap lectures on •* Elementary Science and Coamical Pnyaics ” (3) The committee recoinmends the Board to accept the resignation of itr T. S. Foster, third master of the Boys High School, who has been appointed bean master of tbs West Christchurch school. (4) the co Timitteo recommends the Board to a; - point the undermentioned masters to the Boys nigh School, at the following salaries, viz.. Mr Q. Watson, .£3OO per annum; Mr H. Carrington (pa-t time), £SO per annum; Mr B. V. Irvine (part time), £SO psr annum, Three months’ notice on either side to terminate the agreement. , , ~ On clause 1, the correspondence from Mr Qray was read, as also a letter from Professor Bickerton, recommending that the permission be granted. The Board agreed to the clause of tho report. On clause 2, Mr Webb suggested that the word “ popular ** should bo substituted for 11 cheap.” The Board went into committee on the clause. After a long discussion the Board resumed, and the Chairman reported that the following resolution had been adopted, viz.—“ That the permission sought by Professor Biokerton in his letter of the S3nd May be not granted.” Clauses 3 and 4 were agreed to, and the Board adjourned.
