Before th# Supreme Court to day Thomas William Tate, lately a clerk in the local goods department of the Southland railways, was indicted for embezzling three cheques for £338, handed to him in payment of railage by the Now Zealand and A. Co. The evidence was conclusive as to his guilt, and the jury found a verdict of guilty, accompanied by a rider, recommending him to the leniency of the Court, on account of the laxity of audit displayed. The Crown entered a nolle prose gui on two other indictments, and his Honor passed a sentence of three years’ penal servitude.
