SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL.
This morniig an ordinary meeting was held in the offioes, Hereford street. Present —Mr K, J. Lee (chairman) and Messrs Mathias, Enys, McMillan, Dunlop, P. Jones and Peryman, The Chairman stated the Government had asked how it was proposed to obtain, especially from owners of private threshing machines, sUtistios of returns of grain threshed. Resolved—“ To send a copy of the query to the Ashburton County Council. The committee re Government reserves in the county reported that most of the gravel and pound reserves had already been vested in the Council. The committee thought an annexed list of sixty-three gravel, cyiarry, and ferry reserves should be in the hacds of the Council, and recommended that ap 1 , lication should be made to Government for them. Adopted. The Gas Company would lay gas mair.B ou Eiccarton road in about a month, the lamps to ho erected according to terms agreed on by the Council.
Sir John Hall sent word of his appreciation of the Council's congratulations on hie Knighthood. The Dunsandel Cemetery Board recommended the appointment of Mr Geo. Lill as a member of the Board, yioe Mr Westenra, resigned. Agreed to. Mr Cairns’ plans of patent tram dray-way were laid on the table.
Resolved, on Mr Enys’ motion, seconded by Mr Peryman—“ That the standing committee of the Malvern water race confer with the chairman of the Hakoia (load Board as to various matters connected with the Hororata race, and report at next meeting of the Council.”
Messrs Dobson and Son reported, re Hororata water race, that all contracts ordered had been completed. The Colonial Secretary wrote, re boundaries, Avon and Biocarton districts, that there was no legal power to proclaim the boundaries agreed on hy the Road Boards, and that the only way to give effect to their wishes was by having fresh petitions sent in.
The Chairman of the Licensing Committee for a—.on district had represented the necessity for pro.;.; 0U j n the Act for remunerating the clerk of the committee. Mr Walker had intimated his willingneoa to do the work for an annual foe of £5, which the chairman of the committee considered very moderate, ia view of Mr Walker’s experience. On Mr Pcryman’e motion, seconded by Mr Enys, it was agreed—“ That the remuneration for clerks to the several licensing eommittees in Balwyn County shall not exceed £5 per annum.” Be Park roads and bridges, tho surveyor had reported ; also, as to tho progress with bridge at Helmore’s. Designs for an iron bridge at Fendalton bad been received by the Road Board. Swanston’s tender for tho bridge at Helmore’s at £476 I7s, being the lowest, was accepted. P;freen piles out of twenty had been driven, and it was expected the work would readily be finished by Ist August, Some surprise was expressed at the amount set down for this bridge. lie Heathooto pound, tho Road Board recommended the appointment of Mr John McGregor as pouudkeeper at Perry road, vice Mr W. Wade.—Agreed to. Be tree planting, the proprietor of land adjoining one ot the blocks sown with gums last season had called on the Council to fence. A portion of the land required re-sowing, Decided—(l) To re sow the land dealt with last year; and (3) to erect tho necessary fencing on the Bukaia.
An adjourned special meeting sat to pass by-laws controlling water distribution from the Hororata water-race. On Mr McMillan’s motion, seconded by Mr Dunlop, it was resolved—“ That this Council do make bylaws for prescribing the terms and conditions upon which the Hororata water-race may be used, and prescribing the rates and charges to be paid for water supplied, and that such by-laws shall be in tue words and figures following, .... Also, that a special meeting of this Council bo held on the Ist August, at 10.30 a.m., to confirm this resolution.” Mr Mathias moved—“ That tho sum ot £2OO be placed to the funds of the Malvern water-race to supplement tho £2OO granted by ths Courtenay Road Board for completing branch races to Burnham and West Melton, such grant to be a charge against the future funds allocated to tho Courtenay Road Board district.”
Seconded by Mr Boys and carried. Notices of motion: —(1.) “That £25, granted to Springs Road Board to supplement grant from Akaroa County Council for a like amount to be expended in removing obstructions at the north of the HalatioU and Ahuriri lagoons, bo paid over to that Board to supplement any amount they may be willing to expend for that purpose” (Mr Peryman) ; (2.) “ That £IOO bo placed to the credit of the planting committee to provide seed and labor to re-sow reserves where they failed last season ” (Mr Peryman), Several accounts having been passed for payment, the Council rose a few minutes after one o’clock.
