Westerns, J.P.] Dbithxennbss. —Thomas Lewis was fined 10s, or in default to be imprisoned for forty* eight hours’ imprisonment with hard labor. Lahobht.—Mary Lynch was charged with stealing from George MoClatohie, by whom she had been employed, the following articles: —Antimacassar, artificial flowers, basins, aorkscraw, c»t pickle bottle, child’s money box, child’s hair brush, child’s band, cup, coat, dust pan, dish, elastic band, feather pillow, gent’s handkerchiefs, globe, jam, linen oolars, lady’s silk tie, lady’s comb, lace edging, lady’s cuffs, lamp, _meat dish, mug, Noah’s ark, photographs, pieces of fur, puff box, plates, saucers, single blankets, satin ribbon, trousers, toilet mats, trimming, table forks, wine glasses, woollen shawls, and socdone. Mr Joyce appeared for accused. She had been given notice of dismissal from her service, and, being suspected, her boxes wore searched. Many of the articles named were found there, and others at the houses of some people whom she was accustomed ! o v;sit. The evidence of Mr and Mrs McOlatchie was heard. They identified all the property produced. Detective J. Neill deposed to having found the articles in the boxes belonging to the accused. The coat and trousers named were not produced, and the charge as to them was not gone on with, which brought the value of the articles said to have been stolen to within £5. Mr Joyce addressed the Bench on behalf of the prisoner, and she herself made a statement to the effect that some of tho articles were her own property, and that the others must have been put into her boxes by her employer’s children, who were in the habit of going in and out of her room. The Magistrate said the Court had wo doubt that prisoner had taken the things with the intention of appropriating them. Tho police had taken a very mtro ful course in not following the case up The prisoner was then sentenced to be imprisoned for two months, and to bo kept to hard labor. The articles were ordered to be restored to tho owner.
