The Marion, from New Caledonia, reports the death of Biohard Christian at Norfolk Island, while fishing on a rook. At the inquest on the body of Henry Foreman, who shot himself on Monday, the jury brought in a verdict of temporary insanity.

The facts at present known appear to be that one day last week a shepherd named James White and a cadet named John Harris went out mustering in the country at the hack of Biarioh station. Owing to fog or snow they lost their way, and wandered about for a day or two, until finally, having run out of provisions, and famished with hunger and exhausted with exposure, White unable to proceed any further, and desired Harris to push on and obtain help. Eluding that it was useless to stop by White, unless, both were to perish, Harris pushed on, and succeeded in reaching an uninhabited house on the Awatore shearing reserve. Hero he was found some time later by one of the Messrs Mowatfc in a thoroughly exhausted state, having no food, and being unable even to light a fire. All that Mo watt could gather was that White was on the hillside, and that they must go out and search for him, which they did, and succeeded in finding him at a spot near Mount Horrible, some twenty odd miles distant from Biarioh station. Harris, though very weak, is expected to recover in a few days. WELLINGTON, June 20.

HOKITIKA, June 20. Very heavy rain fell last night and all to<?ay, flooding the low lying psrts of the town, causing boats and vehicles to be in requisition. There was a great fresh in the river, and all the rivers and creeks in the district are bank high. Traffic is completely the up country coaches to various places haring to return to town. No serious damage has as yet been reported. It is the largest flood experienced here for several years. Thera is no sign of the weather abating.

GREYMOUTH, June 20. One of the hauling ropes on the cage for the Teremakau crossing broke this morning, while two passengers were in it. They were, however, hauled over safely on south bank. WBSTPOBT, June 20. A seaman named O. P. Hallonov, was lost overboard from the steamer Merksworth, between Rock’s Point and Duller, on Sunday night. The deceased was securing the boe>m, when he was knocked over the bridge. A boat was lowered and an unsuooejsful search was made. He leaves a wife and'bSr children in Sweden. As far as can be ascertained, the only damage the City of Perth ’has sustained while aground was the loss of part of her rudder.

Fifteen hundred acres of land near Gore have been purchased from the New Zealand Agricultural Company by Messrs. Green and Souness at £lO per acre. The Bluff Harbor Board, at a meeting held to-day, decided, in view of the position taken up by the Government, that if the claims made for the larger portion of the proposed reclamation for railway purposes be insisted the Board will withdraw its Foreshore Reclamation Bill before the House. The proposals of the Department oompletetely ■hut out the Board from frontage to the Harbor.
