Consols have declined g, and are quoted at IOOf. New Zealand securities are unchanged at the following quotations : —Five per cent. 10-40 Loan, 106 J; Five per Cent. (1889) Loan, 106; Fonr-and-a-half per Cent. (1879-1964) Loan, 103. Adelaide and New Zealand wheat, ex store, is quoted at 51s and 50s respectively, but to effect sales lower prices must bo accepted. The market for Australasian tallow is firm; best beef, 43s 6d; best mutton, 455.

A firm and active demand was experienced at to-day’s wool sale. The catalogue comprised 9200 bales. The homeward mails via Naples, which left Melbourne on May 15th per Orient steamship Cotopaxi, were delivered here to-day. The mails via Suez and Brindisi, dated Melbourne, May 9 th, were also delivered to-day.

Tho recent accounts to hand from the Kentish hop ground are of more favorable nature, and it is believed that tho crop will be bettor than was anticipated A portion of the steamship Cuzco’s cargo of frozen mutton was placed in the market to-day. The meat was in fair condition, and averaged 6£d per lb. It has transpired that tho Government has issued instruction to tho officers commanding the troops in Ireland to take the necessary precautionary measures against a rising which it is believed is threatened. The Australians commenced their cricket match at Sheffield to-day against an eleven of Yorkshire. An enormous crowd of spectators was present. The weather was showery during the day, and the wicket was consequently somewhat heavy. Tho homo team went first to the wickets, but with the exception of M. J. Phillips, who scored 38, they were unable to make a stand against the splendid bowling of the Australians, and were all disposed of for a total of 92. Garrett and Giffen both did great execution, the former taking four wickets for 27 runs, and tho latter five wickets for 16. The Australians then commenced their first innings, and when the stumps were drawn for the day had put together 94 runs for a loss of four wickets. The highest scorers were —Bannerman, with 34, and Murdoch, not out, 42, BERLIN, Juno 19.
