Accident.- A man named Eadmond, who liven at Papanui, and it emcloyed on the tramway, met with an accident thii morning, hie bead bong jammed between two vehicle*, whereby he received a punctured wound on the temple. He was taktn to the Hospital, where the »ec-s»ary remedies were applied, when he was rem-ved to hi» home. Spbinqpield to Hokitika.—The weather has been very severe during Friday and Saturday last between Eukitika and Springfield. A strong northwest gale blew, accompanied by heavy rein, and most vivid sheet lightning. The rivers are all (more or lets) flooded, owing to rain and the melting of the snow.
Oxfobd.—A very successful ball was given in the Town-hall, on Friday evening, by the bachelors of this district. The music was supplied by Mr Schwaltz's band. The arrangements made and the supper left nothing beyond to be wished for. Dancing web kept up till early next morning.
Abhbueton R.M Cot/bt —At this Court on Saturday John Oougn was brought before hia Worship the Mayor and fined lOi for drunkenness. A charge against Wm. Hill for stealing £5 from George Wilson was adjourned to the 23rd inet. The Kaiapoi Natives.—A. meeting of the members of ttie Ngsiiabu tribe was held in the runanga house, St. Stephens, on Friday evening. Tare Tehoika, assessor, presiding. Ihaia Tainui read and explained the provisions of the Native Res*rves Bill, which purposes to place all tb,n reserves under a Board of Management. o:ie or two speakers expressed opinions adverpe ti the Bill, and on the motion of Teoti Piu Hutu, seconded by Hoani Uru, it was decided to petition against it it paoßiug the Assembly. A committee was appointed to obtain signatures, and the petition was then drawn up ad will be sent to the Bever&l pahs in the South Island for signature.
Seizing a Church.—Beligions matters m&rather at a discount, juet now in New Plymouth. In one of the churches in that town (nave an exchange) a mani s in rossession who claims to have a lien on the building.
Lyttblton Bobotjgh School. —At a meeting of the committee of this school held on Friday night, Mr John Marshall, of Wsimate, was appointed third assistant master. Three applications only were received for the position, the salary for which is £llO per annum.
Exhibition Dog Phow.—A meeting o£ the above took place on eaiurday night; Mr K. B. Hill in the chair. The secretary reported that everything was going on very will, and that entries were coming in very fast, and that by the number already received it was expected that fully 250 exhibit* will be shown. We remind intended exhibitor! that entries close on Tuesday at S p.m. Ohtjkch Pabadb.—The E battery of Artillery mustered in force yesterday morning at ten o'slook at the Dril! shed, from whence, preceded by the Artillery Band, they marched to tha Ohristcbnreh railway station to meet the liTttolt.in Naval Brigade, whioh, oame through from Port by the 10 25 train. From thence they proceeded to attend Divine service 6t St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Oashel street. The Artillery volunteers were under the command ot Lieut. Strange, whilst the Navals were commanded by Lieut. Dransfield. The Rev. J. Elmalie conducted the service at St. Paul's, which was filled to ove»fl3wing. About 100 volunteers of both branches ot the service were present. Serious Accident.—Yesterday morning about twenty minutes past ten o'clock, Charles Makanini, hairdresser and tobacconist of Colombo street, was driving a horse in a buggy along Colombo street, near the Bank of New Zealand, when the horse made a sudden turn, and ran the buggy against a footbridge, the result of which was that Makanini was thrown violently against a telegraph post, receiving a severe scalp wound on the right temple. Dr. Guthrie was speedily in attendance, and by his directions Makanini was removed to the Hospital, where be is doing as well as can be expected.
The Boixbston akd Spbingfibij> Tbaih-. —Tne train from Rollettcn to Springfield on Saturday morning ran off the line at Aylesbury. The engine was rather seriously damaged, and it and some trucks blocked the line for some hours. The engine of the Whitecliffs train ran down from D&rfield to the scene of the accident, and brought up the passengers to Springfield, and afterwards returned to Darfieid and took the waiting passengers from that station to Whitecliffs. The accident is believed to have been caused by some fault at the point where the siding joins the main line. The mails for the Springfield branch were not delivered till a very late hour in the afternoon. Dotleston Town Hall.—A musical and dramatic antertaicment, in aid of the funds of tho libove, was held in the hall on Friday evening litot, the hall being crowded in all parte. The programme, which was a varied one, commr;i:Cr'd with songs, &c, by the following ladieß and gentlemen:—Mrs Pine, the Mieeoe Smith and Levery, Metsra Frankish, Woodhouee, Jones, and Plant, all of whom w<>ro well received. Mrs Pine and Mr Woodhouee were accorded a we!l deserved encore. A rigger corcert by a number of local gentlemen followed, and was received with tremendous npplauee by the audience. After this came a darkie farce, which brought this part of the entertainment to a close. The hull was then cleared, and dancing was kept up to a late hour ia the morning. The gross proceeds amount to over £7.
Kaiapoi Ohithch Concert.—On Friday evening a concert in aid of the fundi of this ohurch wag given in the Oddfellows' Hall, Hilton street. There was a fair attendance. The musicul selections, both instrumental and vcctl, were of a hiph-olass character, and the performers acquitted themselves to the full satisfaction of the audience, which demanded Fevsral encores. The brass band contributed four selections, which, though rendered with due regard to the mueio ana time, were ■ p liled by the vigor of the drummer. Those who assisted were Misses Winterbourne and Unwin. Mesdames F. Botins, O. J. Cb.aii.pion, O. E. Dudley, and J. H. Moor?, Messrs. G. P. Milsom and Champion. Glees were given by members of the Sydenham Musioal Society with great taste. Messrs B. Macfarlane and Blakeley played the v irious accompaniments on the pianoforte during the evening. Thb Exhibition.—There was a very large attendance of visitors on Saturday at the Exhibition. Mr Morris, the New Zealand B ondiu, made his farewell appearance in the when he went through a variety of feats amidst a display of fireworks. The ball given by the exhibitors takes place fco-night in the Art Gallery, and promises tc be a very su.-ceaafal gathering indeed. The committee havo issued a large number of invitations, to which they have in a majority of cases received affirmative replies, so that over two hundred yuests may jbe expected to be. present. The musio will be supplied by tho Austrian band, ani the catering is in tine efficient hands of Mr W. H. Messenger of his Lordship's Laid or. An already stated M. Joubert has received an in'imation rrom Sir Maurioe O'Borkc, sttting thut ths House will a.ijourn en Thursday till the following Tuesday in order toallow members an opportunity of visiting the Exhibition. The steamer will leave Wellington en Thursday and arrive here on Friday. Duriag the visit of tho tin tubers a series of special entertainments "ill bo organised it the Exhibition. A preliminary meeting was held on Saturday at the. City Council Chambers, presided over by his Worship tho Mayor, to consider a programme of entertainments to take place. A draft programme was considered and forwarded to Sir Maurice O'Ksrke for his approval. The entries for the doll show are ooming forward well, and every clasa will be fully represented. There will be a military baud concert in the afternoon to-day, and a string oonoert in the evening. On Tuesday the Oosmorama will be repeated, when it is vmiounoed that an alteration will be made in tho ground sheet, enabling all to tee distinctly.
Dbainagh Boabd.—A meeting of this body was hold this afternoon at half-past two o'clock. Mr A. Dunbar took his seat as the new member for Heathcote, and Mr O. a. Ball, the Engineer, who has recently returned fcom Melbourne" was alio present. It; was decided to refer Mr Parsons' claim to the Board s ■olioitors, A considerable amount of routine buairess was transacted. Bangioba Linsbbd Oompamt.—On Tuesday Mr Davis will meet the farmers of this district in reference to the linseed question at Matson, Buss and Oo,'a salerooms, and in the evening a meeting of the provisional direotors of the company will also be held. MASONIO Congest.—A concert under the auspices of the various Masonic Lodges was given in the Aahburton Masonic Hall on Friday night. Owing to the great interest taken by the public in.the Wakanui election held that day, the attendance was not so large as might otherwise have been expected, •till the hall was fairly well filled, and tho applause that greeted the rendoring of each Item on the programme fully testified to the faot th«t the audience was a most appreciative one. The opening number—grand processional march, for piano, organ, and flute —was very ifficiently renderod by Misß Kidd, Bro. Weeki", and Messrs H. Morris, and D. Zander, aa also was the ovoi-ture "Zimpa," played by the Miesea Fisb, the latter piece being encored. Miss Kidd was to havo sung two aongs, but owing to a severe oold she was unable to take part in vocal music on the programme, a ciroumitance which caused some little disappointment. Mra Orisp kindly volunteered to fill the vacanoy, and this lady rendered two aongs very fairly. Bro. H. A. Gates, who poasrsses a fine voice, and sings with great expression, gave " He's alwaya at home when he's wanted," in a manner thut brought forth rounds of applause from all parts of the house, in response to which ho lang "Never givo in," in an equally admirable manner. The other ladies and gentlemen who took part in the concert, and rendered effioient services were—Mcsdames Outhbert, Panlington, and Vaughan, the Misses Shnppere, Gates, Bogere, Sinclair, and Messrs Outhbert, Davioa, Gundry, Pickford, W. de B. Wi'am, and Zouch. Bro. H. A. Gates conducted, and the various accompaniments were played by the Misres Kidd and Gates respectively. At the conclusion of the concert, Bro. W. H. Gundry, on behalf of the Masons, thanked the ladies and gentlemen who had come from a distance to render their servioes, and a vote of thanks proposed by Bro. Gundry was heartily responded to. Nobthebn Land, Building, Loan and Investment Society—At a general meeting of members on July sth two nominations are to be made for election of two direotors, in place of Messrs S»niom and Parnham, who retire by rotation, but are eligible for re-election. Three auditors will be appointed to audit the accounts for tho annual meeting. Thb Lxttblton Footbridge.—The longlooked for and long expected footbridge t.vsr the railway yard at Port is in a fair way of becoming a reality. The work was initiated on Saturday last by the oontractorß. Bokough Council.—An ordinary meeling of the Sydenham Borough Council will be held at seven o'clock this evening.
