Offices of the Pkess Company limited, Ohristchurch, June 13th, 1882. 1 Messrs Jonbert and Twopeny, promoters New Zealand lutsrnational Gentl men,— -Referring to a report sent ia by Mr T. Crook on behalf of Messrs J. T. Smith and Co., recommending an award of first class certificate for their exhibit of bcokbinding, I i beg to tako exception to tho remarks! of Mi I Crook, and suggest that they should not be considered. The award of a first class certificate was made to us in preference to Messrs Smith and Co. bj three well known and thoroughly disinterested i experts, whilßt Mr Crook in th? p.gent of a firm ! with whom Messrs Smith deal larjrely, and is, 1 would submit, thortby disqualified under clause p 3of the regulations as to judging and awards. In any case, the judgment was that of thre< 3 gentlemen who examined all the exhibit! thoroughly, and was given, as I understand unanimously. This, 1 submit, should entitle il 1 to much Rreater consideration than that of ont person, who had no opportunity of oxamiring I tho whoto of our exhibit, only a portion of th< beaks being on the open desk._ Should you, however, decide to award t< B Messrs Smith and Co. a first certificate o'. merit, carrying a silver medal, I would respect 1 fully submit that tho undoubted superiority o: our general exhibit, as compared with theirs should entitle us to a certificate of gold medal. • Failing the acceptance of either of thes< 1 suggestions, I have respectfully to request tha a you will call in the assistance of some thoroughl; r qualified person, not in any way connected wit! I tho trade, to decide this matter, and I shal ) cheerfully accept the result. c I have the honor to ba, gentlemen, "Sour very obedient servant, 'c Charles E. Gentlemen, —We observe by the nowepapjra that Mr Crook has been called in to upset the judgment of the very able jury in class 15, and that he has awarded to Messrs J. T. We respactfully submit that, if this is correct, our exhibit is at least worthy of a certificate of gold medal. We were quite eatitfied with the award of the jury as first given. At the same time, we are of opinion that, under the altered circumstances, our exhibit fully deserves the higher honor. We are, gentlemen, Your obedient servants, G.
