Tho raco between the Flora, Tahitian sohooner, and the Rie resulted in the former being signally defeated. The Theatre Boyal is to be reopened by a strong dramatio combination, under Mr J. L. Hall.
Bennett, the absconding debtor from Chriitchurch, was arrested on the arrival of the Rotomahana, and was brought up this afternoon at the police court and remanded to Christchurch. On his be'ng searohed it was found that he had assumed a false name on the voyage, and erased the name " Bennett " from his boxes.
The Good Templars are arranging to give a reception to the Templars on board the ironolad Nelson.
WELLINGTON, June 13
H.M.S. Nelson sailed for Auckland this afternoon. She will not visit Kawau, as at first intended.
BLENHEIM, June 13
The Blenheim session of the Supreme Court opened to-day, before Judgo Riohmond. The Grand Jury returned a " no bill " in the caso of Regina v Adams, for larceny. Alesworth, aooused of the same offenoe, was found "Not guilty." TIMARU, June 13. The Govornor has forwarded a cheque for £2O towards the wreck relief fund.
A tug will be here from Lyttelton tomorrow morning to tow off the ship City of Perth.
Mr William Reid, of Timaru, was sworn in as a barrister and solicitor in the Supreme Court to day by Mr Justioe Williams. Mr Reid was a member of the Scottish bar. DUNEDIN, June 13.
A committee of the Mornington third licensing district have decided that where there was a tie in the local option polling, they cannot entertain any new applications. The district executive committee, I O G.T., have forwarded the following resolutions to the Dunodin members of the House of Representatives :—(1. "That as the whole community suffer from the establishment of licensed houses, and are interested in the continuance of the liquor traffic, it is desirable that the voting power under the several clauses of the Licensing Aot be extended, bo that all persons on the elootoral roll be allowed to vote both at tho annual election of the lioensing oommittee and the triennial vote on local option. (2) That licenses having been freely granted in some small districts for the sake of obtaining the license fees_ for local revenue, extra police protection being at tho same time Bpplied for, it is desirable that police oharges be localised as well as tho liquorrevenue." At the adjourned meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, amongst the subjects that came up were the proposed ogiicultural college, the Otago central railway, and tho constitution of the Harbor Board. A resolution was carried affirming the desirability of tho agricultural college. With regard to the Otago oentral line, resolutions were carried —" That, in the opinion of this Chamber, the lice should be prosecuted vigorously, and that if tho loan be raised, a eufEoient sum should bo allooated to complete the line to Lake Hawea ; hut if no loan be raisod, then to oomDlete it to the Taieri Lako." With regard "to the Harbor Board, a long discussion took place, snd by fifteen to fourteen it was decided that a reconstruction was necessary, and that a committee be appointed to confer with the Harbor Board on the *ubjeot. Dr. Maunsell, chief health officer, wrote to the City Council last night, strongly urging tho necessity of a fever hospital, and drawing attention to the grave consequences of longer allowing the sewage to run into the bay as at presont. In regard to the latter question ho recommended a trial of the soheme of sewage treatment invented by Mr F. C. Burt, of this
city. .
