WELLINGTON, June 12. In the Appeal Court this morning, judgment was given in the case of Hilary v MoAda. The action was brought to recover tolls, of which payment had been refused by defendant on the ground that sine ß the coming into force of the Post Office Act, 1881, his coaches that carried mails were exempt from toll. The Court found for defendant, holding that all vehicles carrying mails are exempt from toll. HAWEBA, June 12. The jury in Mackay’s case returned a verdict that deceased took his own life whilst laboring under temporary insanity. DUNEDIN, June 12. Te Whiti and Tohu visited the Eaik on Saturday, and were received cordially by the Natives. Subsequently, Charles Wesley, a well-known chief, took them severely to tatk for their past conduct. Te Wbiti made no reply, but Tohu said ho and Te Whiti were dead to all intents and purposes, and nothing said to them now could be of any avail. They did not seem discontented with the result of the visit. Friday’s concert realised nearly £IOO for the Timaru relief fund. INVERCARGILL, June 12. The bar of Watson’s Hotel was entered last night, and a deck containing nearly £6O stolen. An entrance was effected from the back door of the hotel. Owing to the weather, cropping operations are in a forward state throughout the district. The season has been unusually dry, and water in some parts of the high country would be beneficial.
