LICENSING COMMITTEES.
LINCOLN.
The annual meeting of tho licensing committee was held in the Boad Board Office, P.-ebbleton, on Thursday, June Bth, at noon. Present-—Messrs J. N. Tosswill (chairman), J. Qammack, W. K. Peryman, J. W. Overton, and F. W. Brittan,
Constable Wetherly attended in the interests of the police.
The Chairman announced that Mr F. WEast had been appointed clerk to the committee.
The applications for new licenses were taken first as follows: —D. W. Bartrum, Robert street, Lincoln; B. Day; Joseph Judge, Robert street; and Ellison, Junction road, Lincoln. Mr Joynt appeared for Mr Judge; Mr Thomas opposed on behalf of Mr Sluis and other petitioners. After hearing argument for and against, the committee retired for a quarter of an hoar, and on returning the Chairman announced that the committee were unanimous not to grant more licenses at Lincoln, J. G. Kissel, South road, Templeton (Mr Thomas). Under the old regulations applicant held a wine and beer license. Counsel stat ed there being no provision in the now Act for a wine end beer license, his client applied for a full public license, and further stated that the late Commissioner* had given Mr Kissel to understand that ia the event of his building a new house hi* application would be favorably considered. He having built the house ho trusted the committee would grant him a license, Mr Button opposed on behalf of Mr Symmonds, on the ground that the house was not required, being within a mile of hn licensed hour?, which answered all the requirements of the district.—License granted. The following renewals were granted :—J. W. Anderson, Prehbleton Hotel, Prebbleton ; J. W. Francis, Eolleston Hotel, Bolleston ; G. Hutchins, Whcatsheaf, Shand’i road ; J, Mager, Springston ; J. Sluis, Perthshire Arms, Lincoln (Mr Thomas); the licensee to accommodation and better appointments. Counsel stated plans for additions would be submitted at the next quarterly meeting. Mr J. H. Francis applied for a temporarytransfer to James Frost. He also applied for an extension of his license for three day# on the 14th, 15th and 16sh June, in connection with the coursing meeting to be held at Holleaton, —Granted. WAIPABA. The annual licensing meeting for this district was held in the Hoad Board office, Waikari, at noon on Saturday. Present—Messrs J. D. Lance (chairman), Farkerson, Douglas and Johnston. H. McLean applied for a new license for an hotel in course of erection near tho Waikari Railway station. Mr Watson appeared on behalf ot Mr Knight, owner of tne Weka Pass Hotel, to oppose, on the grounds that the committee had no power to grant a new licence till the local option poll had been taken. The committee being of opinion that they would not increase the number of licenses within the district, a* a renewal of license had not been applied for one of the hotels in the district, granted the same, as they considered such a hotel as McLean’s would be a benefit to tho public, if finished according to the plans produced. Renewal certificates were granted to Thomas Hood, Star and Garter Hotel, Waiksri, and W. J. Norrie, Hurunni Hotel. Mr Watson asked the committee to grant a license to the Weka Pass Hotel, and said, though the tenant had not applied, the owner of the property wished for the license. It was decided that, as no application had been made, tho committee could not entertain same. Mr M. Lynskey was appointed to take tho local option poll of the district on December Ist. KOWAI. Tho annual licensing meeting for the Kowoi district was held on Thursday at the Courthouse, Amberley. The members of committee present were—Messrs. F. Courage (chairman), Eiiso-, and Houghton. The police report on the hotels of the district was satisfactory. Transfer from J. Hutchinson to G. Wheeler of the license of the Sefton Hotel was granted, and the license of the Bailway Hotel, Amberley, from J. Hood to G. B. Daniel was granted. Renewal certificate* were ordered to be issued to H. McLean, Crown Hotel, Amberley ; G. B. Danoe, Bailway Hotel, Amberley; G. Wheeler, Sefton Hotel; H. Stace, City Hotel, Leithfield; and Bryan Flynn, Ashley. H. Stace applied for a renewal of his license from the City Hotel to the Boyal Hotel at Leithfield, which latter had been renovated and fitted up ns a first-class hotel. The application was granted, it being shown that the Act had been complied with, in applicant having duly informed the owners of the City Hotel of his intention to leave it. Wholesale liocnoea were granted to J. White and 00., W. S. Smith and 00., Amberley. A license of a similar kind, applied for by John Lister, Baioairn, was, after consideration, refused. The committee refused to giant the extended licenses to midnight in the two cases of the hotelkeepers at Amberley. Mr Watson appeared in all the cases for the applicant*. MALVEEN. The first meeting of the Malvern Licensing Committee was held at tho Boad Board Office, Sheffield, at 12 o’clock on Wednesday. Present—Messrs Barr, Enys, Mathias, Mcllraitb, and Rutherford. Mr Mollraith was elected chairman. The Jfollowing applications were dealt with : Edward Smith applied for a new house at South Malvern. The committee informed applicant that they could not entertain tho application until the poll for an increase had been taken David Mausoa applied for a renewal of BluS Hotel, Oaalgato. After an admission from the applicant that the former licensee was still in the house, the committee decided to give Mansou three months to get the house into his own hands. If than not satisfactory to them he would lose his license. Edward Butter applied for renewal of Porter’s Pass Hotel, granted; A. McNae, Cass Hotel, granted ; Hugh Cassidy, Kowai Pass Hotel, renewal granted ; Michael Kianagan, renewal of the Railway Hotel, Sheffield, renewal granted ; Henry Davies, for renewal ot Junction Hotel, Kowai Pass, applicant arksd for extension till twelve o’clock. The committee promised to take matter into consideration ; renewal granted. James O’Malloy, Glacier Hotel, Boaley, renewal granted; George Butcher, for Castle Hill Hold, renewal granted; James Short, for renewal of tho Whitecliffs Hotel, police report satisfactory, renewal granted. The committee adjourned till 29th June. OXFORD, The Licensing Committee of this district met in theE.M. Court.on Wednesday. The members present were Messrs Wilson Fisher, Gorton, Higgins, and Nalder. A letter was read from Mr Luers, apologising for his absence through illness. Mr Higgins woe elected chairman. Sergeant Scott represented the police, and stated that he had been appointed inspector in the district. Mr Watson applied for a publican's license on behalf of Mr Paget for the Commercial Hotel. The license was granted. On behalf of Mr Love, Mr Watson applied for a license for tho Hare.wood Arms Hotel. License granted. Mr J. Hale, for whom Mr Watson applied for a license for the Oxford Hotel, granted. Mr J. Fisher, who was represented by Mr Watson, applied for a permanent transfer from Mr B. B, Barker to himself of the Terminus Hotel. Granted. The chairman asked Sergeant Scott what provision, there was in case of fire. As he was the inspector, it would bo his duty to sea to this. Ha (the chairman) had seen in several hotels a strongrope laid in the lobby upstair*. This, or .some other mode of escape must ba adopted. The committee adjourned.
