EAYBNS v SYDENHAM. A match between the above clubs came off on the ground of the former on Saturday last, resulting in a win for the latter by five tries to nil. The Ravens were certainly at a disadvantage, several of the origins! team not. showing up, and ultimately played one short. 8 lortly after thiei o’clock the ball was set. in motion, and it wsa soon pretty evident that .Sydenham were getting the best of it, the Ravens’ backs being very weak, and it was not long before Mann, by a good run, secured a touch-down, being well seconded by Robinson, who followed his example, hut both tries at goal were fruitless. The second spell was more evenly contested, each team working with a will, Stringer and Smith for the Ravens doing wonderful work, but notwithstanding these exertions Mann again distinguished himrelf by gaining the third touch-down for his side, the try again proving fruitless. Allardyce end Taylor played hard during this rpoll, whioh ended in the Ravens’ twenty-five lino. During the third spell Allardyce, Robinson, and W. Edgar each made good runs for their respective sides, and Marr, by some good play, contrived a touch-down, the try proving a failure. The final spell was hotly contested, scrummaging being very frequent. Allardyce made a fine run half the length of the gronnd, but was pushed out when n- ar the goal line, and, subsequently, being aided by Hall, succeeded in running in, the try again proving fruitless. The game finished about the centre of the ground, as above, in favor of Sydenham. For the Ravens, Hall, Stringer, and Smith were very conspicuous, the Sydeuham being well represented by Marr, Grantham, Robinson and Newman. MEEIYALE v GLOUCESTER. A match took place between the above clubs on Saturday. The Merivalo captain won the toss, and decided to kick efif, giving the Gloucester the wind; F. Wilkinson kicking off for the Merivale at throe o'clock, the being pretty even, as nothing was gained during the first spell. Gresham then kicked off for the Gloucester, and after a few runs Hobbs secured a goal for the Gloucester, A. Smith thou kicked off for the Merivale, but the Merivale worked up to the Gloucester goal line, and W. Wilkinson with a smart run received a touch, which he converted into a goal. Hobbs then kicked off for the Gloucester, but F, Wilkinson with a smart run secured a try, the Merivale thus winning by a goal and a try to a goal. For the winners, F. and W. Wilkinson, A. Smith, H Hiddlestone, and F. Reese ; and for the Gloucester, A. Hobbs, Oooko, Gresham, Charlesworth, F. Hobbs, and Maurice, showed good play. RANGIORA A football match was played on the ground of the North Canterbury Club at Rangiora on Saturday between that club and Bast Christchurch Club. The weather being wet and the ground very heavy, was unfavorable to the play. The local club wore disappointed in the non-arrival of at least seven of the best players. The visitors were driven to the ground from town in a four-horse drag driven hy Mr Lewis, and eltogether they brought a good team on to the play, under the captaincy of Mr Fuller. The captain of (ho N. 0.0. was Mr G. D. Greenwood. The visitors won the tois, and elected to play downhill. The ball was kicked off by the North Canterbury captain at 3 30, when play began, and owing to a mull on the part of the local club’s halfbacks the visitors penned the homo team within their twenty five, when the whole of that spell was played, nothing resulting. Thera was a little bit of good play on the part of the captain and Stack, who landed the ball into the centre, when the spoil ended The result of the game was three tries on the part of Bast Christchurch to nil. The conspicuous players on the part of the latter were Puller, Kesteven, and G. Fisher, and of the home team, in addition to those named, the D'Auvergncs, George, Winsloo, and Horrell.
