LICENSING COMMITTEES.

AVON. The Licensing Committee for the Avon district sat at noon this day, at the Ricoarton Road Board office. Present—Messrs R. J. S. Harman (chairman), W. H. Lane, B. Westenra, H. J. Hall, and J. Bailey. NEW APPLICATIONS. John Paynton, The Bower, Now Brighton road (Mr Bruges). Applicant stated that the alterations to the house were completed, and that it contained six rooms, in addition to those occupied by the family.—-Granted, the ohaitmon expressing the hope that the same good character attaching to the house whilst it had a wine and beer license would be maintained under the hotel license.

William Seabright, Racecourse Hofei, Racecourse (T. W. Maude) —The clerk stated there was no objection to the license being granted, and that the coccssary notices had been given. Applicant, being sworn, deposed that the application had been affixed to the door of the hotel. The Chairman asked if there was any provision in ease of fire. Applicant stated that the premises were built of brick, and there were two staircases in different parts of the bouse. Mr Maude deposed that ha had been over the house, and there were easy means of exit, with verandahs in front of bedrooms, and that there was a large supply of water, at least 2400 gallons being pumped up. RENEWALS. Cornelius Dyer, B ooaiton Hotel, Biccarton road. In reply to the chairman, the applicant stated there was only one staircase, and that the bouse had fourteen bedrooms. Granted, on condition that extra facilities for escape in case of fire would be provided. John Franks, Talbot Hotel, Yaldhurst. — Granted. John A.lHansmanJFeatbo.a Hotel, Addington (Mr Button). —Granted. David W. Hamilton, New Brighton Hotel, New Brighton.—Granted. Mary Martin, Black Horse, Lincoln road (Mr Bruges).—Granted, George Simmons, George and Dragon, South road, Templeton.—Granted. Henry Smith, Courtenay Arms, White’s bridge (Mr Button). —Granted. Samuel Treleaven, Bridge Inn, Seven-mile Peg North road.—Granted. Wm. O. Webb, Bush Inn, Upper Biccarton (Mr Bruges).—Granted. John Wild, Sawyers’ Arms, Papanni (Mr Button). —Granted. John Albert Young, Fapanui Hotel.— Granted. Extension of timo till eleven o’clock was granted to Messrs Wild and Young, on the ground that Papanui was a tramway terminus. Similar applications by Messrs Smith, Haneman, Dyer, Franks, Simmons, Webb, and Mrs Martin, were refused, not being considered necessary. Mr Maude applied on behalf of Mr Thos. Quill, that his license fee at the Exhibition building be reduced to £1 a week, as he intended reducing the number of hie bars at the end of the month, and after the 10th July would only keep one open tor the convenience of exhibitors packing up. His receipts did not exceed £lB per day, a great part of which was for luncheon. Granted. License fee to bo reduced to £1 per week in future. An extension of hours was granted Mr Quill on the occasion of the Friendly Societies’ Ball on June 15th. SOUTH BAKAIA. The annual meeting was held in the Boad Board office on Thursday at noon. Present— Messrs E. 8. Coster (chairman), 0. N. Maokie, 8. Mangham, and J. Mann. The reports by the police on tho hotels in the district being considered satisfactory, renewals were granted to A. J, Howell, South Bakaia Hotel; J. S. Compton, Bailway Hotel, Bakaia; and J. Wallace, Ohertsey Hotel, Chertsey. In each case the licensee to eet apart one room in his house as a bathroom. The question of keeping tho houses open after 10 p.m. having been brought up, it was decided by the Committee that the Act be complied with till next quarterly meeting, when applications may be formally lodged, as it was mentioned by the police that it was their intention to oppose the application if made. KAIAPOI. The [annual licensing meeting was held hero in the Court House on Thursday. The members of Committee present were Messrs Hurse (chairman), Porter, Robins, Coup and Blackwell, The police report on the hotels was highly satisfactory. The Committee, after retiring for half-an-hour, granted the applications for the renewal of certificates to G. H. Wearing, Kaiapoi Hotel, W. Pattman, Pier Hotel; W. Burnip, Middleton’s Hotel; J. Hirst, Mandeville Hotel ; and A. Piper, Kaikanui Hotel. Mr A. Nalder, on the part of Mr Wearing, applied for an extension of his license to twelve o’clock each evening. Mr Burnip applied for the twelve o’clock extension, as his hotel was nearest the railway station, a house of call for travellers adjacent to the principal livery stable, and the Oddfellows’ Hall, in which entertainments were frequently held, Mr Patman and Mr Piper also applied for tho extension. After a short consultation, tha Chairman announced that the Committee would not grant the extensions now, bat woul be prepared to consider the same at the next quarterly meeting. If there were any special occasions, when extensions were necessary, the Committee would grant them, Mr Burnip pointed out that this would involve further fees. The Chairman again pointed out the necessity for maintaining the sanitary arrangements of back premises, and intimated that hotelkeepers could not refuse to accommodate travellers if they had room for tho same, Mr Wearing’s application for leave to discontinue lighting hit lamp was declined.
