LOWER HEATHCOTE RACING CLUB MEEiTNG. Mondat, Mat 20th. President, Mr James Wilkin; stewards, Messrs Newton, F. C. Tabart, W, Atwood, E. R. Deacon, Dr. Prins, F. Egan, D. Orange, J. Campbell, P. H. Dunoan ; judge, Mr J. W. Davis j starter, Captain Coventry; clerk of the course, Mr F. G. P. Leach ; clerk of the scales, Mr A. Dunbur j hon. treasurer, Mr H. Piper ; hon. sec, Mr J. Bandford ; handioapper, Mr K. Griffith. This very pleasant suburban meeting, which took place yesterday as Heathoote, was tho most successful and best attended gathoring ever held there. The weather was all that could be desired, and the sport exceptionally good. Mejsrs Hobbs and Goodwin had one totalisator on the ground/which, judging from the orush and crowd in its precincts, must have put through a very large sum of mocoy during the day. In the absence of Mr G. O'Oonnell, Captain Coventry aoted as starter, and the various officials got through their duties very creditably. Sport opened with the Heathoote Handicap Steepleohase, for whioh five animals saddled up. Fairplay and Albion were as nearly as possible equal favorites, at about 2 to 1 against them. The result of the race proved that they were worthy of the confidence placed in them, as a magnifioent finish between the two terminated in a dead heat, Norman third. As Fairplay pulled up lame, his owner determined on scratching his horse in the run off, Mr Olayfiold's Tasmanian bred animal was therefore returned the winner. Four started for the Maiden Steepleohase, wherein Bar. bary, a son of Barbarian, who proved himself a smart horse in a hack flat race up at one of the Northern meetings a few months bad*, was returned the winner. This horse, from the form he here showed at the illegitimate game, should be heard of again. The Birthday Handicap Cup, the last flat race, we suppose, this season, brought together six animals. For this Mr S. Higgott's mare Psyche was served up a warm favorite at about level money. Old Supplejack, who carried the top weight, and who was considered by moßt of the knowing ones not to have a ghost of a chance, astonished everyone by mating the running almost throughout, and won easily from tho favorite, with Pippin third. The Exhibition Handicap Steeplechase, the principal event of the day, was considered a moral for Canard, and so it proved in the end, though at one time Albion looked particularly dangerous. His rider, however, made a mistake in the number of laps negotiated, and brought the horse past the winning post before completing the distance, thus completely throwing away whatever chance he had of pulling off the race. Most probably the actual result would have been the samo, as the son of Anteros is undoubtedly a cut above any of hio opponents. The Trot brought together a large field of seventeen animals, and a " dark " animal of the name of Misohief, who had 250 yards start, soon showed that hor right plaoe would have boen at scratoh, and even there would prove to have too much foot for her opponents. The Hack Race, won by Glen, and a supplementary event in the shape of a Consolation over hurdleß, won by Levant on the post from Kosciusko, terminated one of tho best and most pleasant of the many small meetings held in the Canterbury provincial district during the past seassn. The following are tho details: —

On earning into the straight Mr Piper's horse had a tiro lengths' lead of Albion, but he quickly closed, and an exciting finish resulted in a dead heat, Norman third. Albion subsequently walked over, Fairplay being soratohod. Totaliaator, total 171—37 on Albion, 43 on Fairplay, the two divided the pool. At the back stretch Fayche ran through and took aeoond plaoe to Supplejaok, with Farewell third. On pasting the saddling paddock the aeoond time round Psyohe took up the running, with Supplejack Becond, and Farewell and Pippin in cloao attendance. No ohange took place until getting in tne straight for home, when the veteran Supplejack gradually drew up and got on terms with Higgott's mare, and on being finally called upon, oame away an eaay winner of about four lengths, about the tame distance separating second and third. Totaliaator, total 332, only 26 on the winner. Exhibition Handicap Steeplechase of 50 sovb ; about three mile 3. Mr H. Lunn's ch g Canard, by Anteros, lOst lOlos (31bs over) (Lyford) 1 Mr H. No ohange occurred until passing the enclosure for the aeoond time, when Shark gave plaoe to Canard, but after negotiating the eod wall they again quickly changed placea, Lsvant still leading. In the eecond lap Albion took up third position, Canard fourth. Levant then gave place to Shark, and shortly Albion ran up and took aeoond position, and preaently ran up alongside of Shark. The latter being hard pressed fell baok into seoond poaition. The bay horse led on round the courae _ the noxt lap, but on reaching the straight, unfortunately Sheenan mistaking the distance rode straight on, and passed the winniupc post instead of contmuirg round. Bhark was the first over the aod bank in tho last lap, followed closely by Kosciusko and Levant, Canard in clcs* attendance. The field then closed up, aid on entering the straight were all of a bunoh ; but Canard whbn called upon oame away with tho greatest ease, and won easily by five lengths, Levant beating Shark on the post for second place. After some disoussion, it was carried that a steepleohase meeting be held in the Northern distriot, under the name of the North Canterbury Steepleohases, and that a race meeting be held at a date to be fixed. Owing to the rather limited attendance, it was resolved to appoint the officers and stewards at a meeting to be held on that day fortnight.
