THE LATE FIRE AT THE GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE.

[By Telegraph.] [Per o,s. Arawata, at Auckland.] SYDNEY, May 25. An extensive fire broke out at the Government printing offioe en the 24th, resulting in the destruction of a quantity of printing material, books, and stationery, estimated in value at over £20,000. The fir* broko out at eleven in the morning. The origin is unknown. The fire brigades were engaged in the demonstration at the Agricultural Society's grounds. Twenty minutes elapsed before the firemen appeared, the flumes in the meantime spreading rapidly. For two hours the fire raged fieroely, the efforts of the men being chiefly directed to the prevention of the flames spreading. Tho buildings finally were completely gutted from basement to ceiling, although the firemen worked with the utmost vigor, and bravely, some of the men receiving severe burns by molten lead dropping on them. Several valuablo printing and folding machines were destroyed, besides the stereotyping apparatus. Although important public papers relating to party affairs were lost, those beariug upon the Premiex's Budget speech were fortunately saved. The property was insured in various officea to the amount of £35,000.
