DUNEDIN, May 29,
The Union Company have on the way out, or under construction, ten new vessels, five, intended for tho intercolonial and coastal trade, are ell of the same dimensions —285 ft. length, 36ft, width, 25ft, depth, or a trifle larger than the Botomahana. The first of them, tho Manipouri, now duo in Melbourne, is to be followed by the Wairarapa, the Haurota, tho Waihora, and the Taraweva. The Manipouri will replace the Albion, the Wairarapa the Rotorua (which is to be employed exclusively on the coast), and the Waihora and Tarawera will replace the Bingarooma and the Arawats, which are to be utilised as extra boats during the summer, and as relieving boats in winter. The Hauroto, which has a carrying capacity for 2000 tons, is to be employed in tho Sydney trade, and the smaller boats are to be used on the coast for general cargo purposes. One of the new steamers will be called tho Express boat. She will be employed on tho run from Lyttelton to Wellington, Taranaki, Onehunga, and back, performing the round trip onoe a week. She i) similar in size to the Hawea, and will steam fifteen knots per hour. She has accommodation for 100 saloon passengers, and is expected to make the trip each way in thirty-four hours’ steaming. The Hero at once replaces the Taiaroa in the Fiji trade, for whioh a special steamer is building.
