COMMERCIAL.
The Customs duties collected at Christchurch on Tuesday, May 23rd, wore as foV.owa: —Spirits, 168 19s 6d ; tobacco, £*s 18s 6d ; wine, £l2 13s; beer, .£ .3 5s fad; sugar, |£s7 16s 2d; tea, JB!8 ;3a 4d; goods by weight, .£45 13s 3d; ad valorem, £62 15s 7d. Total, £395 4s 3d.
There has been no alteration to report in the state of our markets during the past week, which continue quiet. Bottled stout be-ng in short supply has been in demand, chiefly for good brands. Ale, iu bulk and bottle, has hud fair business at previous rates. Whiskies, borh Scotch and Irish, have been in demand, chiefly for the fi ier sorts. Geneva continues rather fioaroe, and is only obtainable at advanced v-.tos. Sales are noted of dry champagne, chiefly of “Monopole.” Krug’s, though offered low, is unnoticed. Tobaccos are a shade easier. Twist has hod a small" business at from Is 3d to is sd, according to quality; good nailrod is firm at Is 9d; fancy sorts continue scarce and dear. Kerosene is freely offered at very low rates •without leading to any extensive business. Bluestone has had good inquiry, and been readily quitted at 3ls for best quality. Dried fruits have had a small business, principally in currants, at 5Jd. Eletne and Sultana raisins arc easier, while Muscatels, being in short supply are only obtainable at extreme Agates. Caudles, for the season, continue very quiet, and what few sales are effected are at unprofitable prices. A email business has been done in cornsacka at 8s fad. Woolpacks have had a little inquiry, and are now worth 3a 4d. Salt, both coarse and fine, has had good sake at improved Saltpetre, being now in season, has been freely quitted at up to 45s for best refined. Sugars are a trifle lower, sales of finest white crystals being noted at £3l 10s. Teas have had but little attention, and that chiefly for the finer *orts. which are getting scarce. Fish is neglected, except salmon, sales of which have been freely made at 8s 6d ; sardines continue too high to secure sales. Boiled and raw oils are being pushed off at low rates, and sales are noted at a reduction from previous quotations. Feuping wire has had good sales at improved prices, aaveral sizsa being in short supply.
