FOOTBALL.
CHRISTCHURCH CLUB v SOUTH CANTERBURY CLUB.
A match was played yesterday afternoon on the Lancaster Park ground, between fifteen members of the Christchurch Club and fifteen members of the South Canterbury Club, the latter being composed thus : —Gao. Smith and Bethune, quarter backs ; Jones and Eiohbaum, half backs ; Reid (captain) and R. Roberts, full backs ; Chapman, Goodwin, Shirtcliffe, Shepherd, George Wood, Gordon Wood, Cliff, and R. J. Wilson, forwards. The Timaru team being one man short, the deficiency was supplied by Christchurch. After toss for choice of goal, Christchurch kicked off, and after some sharp play Lee got the first touch, which was converted into a goal by Millton in a determined manner. After a spell play was resumed by Reid kicking off for the 8.0.0., the ball being sent to the centre of the ground. A series of scrimmages ensued, when Christchurch got another try, which was again beautifully kicked by Millton, and Christchurch scored the second goal. The third spell was kicked off by Millton, and the ball was soon taksnuear the Timaru goal, but South Canterbury had a hard try for supremacy, but Lee took matters in hand and scored the third goal for Christchurch. Matters now looked gloomy for the South, and in the fourth spell George Wood kicked off, but Christchurch soon had it nearly to goal again. The South boys did their best, but were overmatched, and Lee again kicked a goal, and the game was over, being four eoala and a try for Christchurch, against nil for Timaru.
Shirtoliffo, Shepherd, Wilson, Eiohbaum, Smith and Bethune played well for South Canterbury, whilst the play of Lewin, Millton, Farr, Lee, Helmoro, Ootterill, and Chapman was particularly noticeable for Christchurch.
