St. Lindsay. The Grand National Steeplechase held today at the racecourse was very well attended. The day was beautiful and most enjoyable. Pavitt; faandicappers, Messrs 8. P. Andrews, E. O. Farr, and P. O. Purchase. The competition for these events began at half-past 12 t' is afternoon, in Lancaster Park. The diy was bright, but slightly cold. The ground, as is not ususual, was damp, but otherwise it was in good order. The attendance was moderate at the outset, owing, perhaps, partly to the omission of an announcement as to time of starting. A few ladies eat on the pavilion stand, a photograph of which was taken by Mr Reynolds. A number of competitors being ranged in lino before the front eeat in athletic dresses, the band of the Canterbury Yeoman Cavalry played on the ground, under the conductorship of Mr T. Tankard. The programme was rather lengthy, comprising twenty-one items. Mr Bavonhill had a booth on the ground. At two o’clock there were, approximately, 560 people present, inclusive of 150 children’s tickets. The boys from the Lyttelton Orphanage were present. Between one and two o’clock there was a general cry for luncheon, but none was forthcoming. Even a bun or a sandwich was not procurable. Maiden Race, 120 yards. Six started. The race was fairly contested, and was won by a couple of feet by N. Line 1 J. Nicholas 2 Time, 12£sec. Handicap Boys’ Race, under sixteen years ; 410 . yards (handicap). Only two started. A. Hobbs, 20yds 1 E. Scrimshaw, scratch ... 2 Time, 61 3-sth sec. Free Handicap, 150 yards. Fifteen started, lha race was interesting, concluding with an admirable finish, H. Lowry, 17yda 1 H Mann, 16yds ... ... ... 2 Time, 16 l-sth sec. One Mile Walking Handicap. Lawrence 1 Woodward 2 Four started, being C. Lawrence (scratch), W. Spicer (GOyds), J. Woodward (60yds), and F. Baddrell (75yds). The quartette labored manfully. The hod and toe walking of Spioer was very questionable at one time, and ho was disqualified. JUis time was 7min 38seo. Lawrence was accoridngly declared first, coming in sseo after Spicer; Woodward, second. Haddrell succumbed daring the progress of the event. ICO Yards Handicap. H. Mona (6yds) 1 J. Butler (syds) 2 Eight competed ; a capital race. After passing Mann “collided” against a lad, whose eagerness tempted him on to tho running path. Both fell, and the bystanders said, “ Servo him right,” meaning the lad. Time, lOVsec. Running long Jump. J. McGregor (17ft 3in) 1 J. Butler (U3ft loin) 2 Three contested for this event. Birthday Handicap; 120, 220 and 440 yards. 120 yards, N. Line, 10yds 1 A. Anderson 2 H. Mann 3 Time, 12 3-sth see. The other two races comprised in this handicap had not been run when our despatch left. Half mile Handicap. M. McCormack, 75yds 1 G. Whiting, 40yda 2 W. McGregor, 75yds 3 Six started. Time, 2 min. 3 l-sth see. Thia was the fastest half mile handicap ever run in Canterbury. Hewitt did the distance against time on Biccarton road just under Imin. 54sec. Two Miles Bicycle Handicap. Langdown 1 Dnnsford ... 2 Time 6min 58 4-ssoc. W. H. Langdown (scratch), J. F. Norris (60yds). F. E. Dnnsford (80yds), F. M. Allison (iCOyds), R. W. Mountfort (125yds). R. Pinck. ney (220yds), C. W. Williams (300yds), and A. Pavitt (350yds) competed. Pavitt knocked off in his third round, and Williams presently followed suit. In the last lap tho scratch man passed Dnnsford, after which the result was no longer doubtful. Langdown, the winner, carried off the Novice’s Race last season, and is, therefore, all the more to be congratulated on his victory.
