INQUEST.

An enquiry touching tho death of James Patrick Mnher was held before Dr. Coward (coroner) and a jury, of whom T. H. Bone was chosen foreman, at the house of deceased’* parents in Byron street, Sydenham, yesterday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Mr Perceval watched tho proceedings on behalf of the father of deceased. After viewing the body the following evidence was adduced ; Mary Maher deposed that on the afternoon of Friday last, about twenty-five minutes to fire, her son was playing in the garden attached to tho bouse. He was deaf and dumb, and aged six years ia March last. She left the house to fetch a bucket from a paddock in tho adjoining street. Shortly after she saw deceased in a cart being taken to the Hospital. She stopped the vehicle, and took him out, putting him to bed in the house. Sometimes he wandered a little way from home, but she did not allow him to go about of his own accord.

By Mr Perceval —He was intelligent, saving his infirmity ; strong for his ogs, aud in good health. Mr Langdowa’s men wore in the habit of puihing trucks on the siding, aud leaving them in motion. By a j r.ror—He was nob in the habit of frequenting Langdown’a siding. Biohard Martin deposed that he was a carter, in the employ of Mr Lanjdown. About four o'clock on Friday afternoon last he helped to unload a truck of logs, whioh, being emptied, was pushed out over the crossing. Told tho other men in the yard that he and O’Neill would put the truck across the street, that they ware to go on with their work. Before starting witness looked out and saw the road clear. Just as they entered the gates they felt the truck jump over something. O’Neill remarked — “For the love of God, what has the truck jumped over now ?” As ho spoke the hindermost wheel went over the obstruction and witness kicked against the body of deceased, wh/oh he picked up, called O’Neil to take, and then ran back for ono ot the other man to come and assist, whilst ho ran for the lad’s mother, but found she was away from home. On returning tho others had placed the child ia a milk cart to bo taken to tho Hospital. The mother than oame, and by her advice stopped them, and she took the child home. By the Ooroner—Was in charge of the trucks, and did that work when not carting. I# in Mr Langdowa’s employ. By tho Foreman —Always crossed the road slowly aud kept a look out. The accident happened on the north Hide of the street. By Mr Perceval—The truck was empty. Both were pushing it from behind with their shoulders, keeping a side look out. Daniel O’Neill, also in Mr Langdown'a employ, gave corroborative evidence. Dr. Doyle deposed to having seen deceased on Fridoy evening, and, in ooaj unction with Dw. Hedwill and Anderson, set the loft leg, which was broken in two places, and amputated tho right leg. The child did pretty well till Saturday afternoon, when convulsions ensued, on the evening of whioh day he died. Sarah Jane Standidge deposed to having seen the accident, bat could only see one man pushing the truck. She was quite sure she did not see O’Neill.
