[eeutke’s TELEGRAMS.! LONDON, May 19. The election which has taken place for a member for the northern division of of tho West Riding of Yorkshire, in the room of the late Lord F. Cavendish, has resulted in the return of Mr Holden (Liberal), by a majority of 2000 over the Hon. Charles Gathorno Hardy (Conservative), second son of Viscount Cranbrook.

It is announced that the Right Hon. John Whitaker Ellis, Lord Mayor of -London, is to receive the honor of Baronetcy. In the House of Commons last night, the Irish Repression Bill was read a second time by a majority of 45. In the course of tho debate which took place, Mr Gladstone stated that tho provisions of the Bill had been long planned by the Government,and were not merely intended as an act of resentment for tho murder of tho Irish Secretary. Consols are unchanged at 102£-. The market rato of discount has been reduced to 2£ per cent.; the Bank rate remains at 3 per cent.

Colonial breadstuffs continue dull at the following prices ;—Adelaide wheat, ox store, 53s ; New Zealand wheat, ex store, 51s; Adelaide flour, ex store, 355. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 2,460,000 quarters. Australian tallow—Best beef has declined one shilling, to 42s 6d ; boat mutton has advanced sixpence, to 44s 6d. New Zealand securities—Five per Cent. 10.40 Loan remains at 106 ; Five per Cent. 1889 Loan has advanced by 10a to 104, ex div.; Pour-and-Half per Cent., 18791904 Loan has also advanced by 10s to 104. Accounts to hand of tho season’s hop crops aro somewhat unsatisfactory.

Ten thousand bales of wool wore offered at to-day’s auction. The prices showed a tendency to advance. May 20. Tho P. and O. Company have declared a dividend of 2J per cent, for the past half-year. At the wool sale to-day 10,101 bales were offered. The tone of the sale was strong.

The betting on the Derby, which is to be run on the 24th inst., is as follows : 3 to 1 agst Bruce, 6to 1 agat Shotover, 7 to 1 agst Dutch Oven, 8 to 1 agst Quicklime, 9 to 1 agst Givald.
