[ESUTEE’S TELEGEAMS.] LONDON, May 17. In the House of Commons last night the matter of an alleged understanding between the Government and Mr Parnell in regard to the latter’s release was under discussion. Several Conservatives reaffirmed the truth of the statements which have been current regarding a compact between Mr Parnell and the Government, and denounced the covenant as utterly infamous and degrading. Mr Gladstone, in reply, hotly denied the truth of the assertions, and challenged proof of the alleged compact. The cricket match—Australians versus Oxford University—was won to-day by the Australians by nine wickets. The police to-day effected the arrest, at Liverpool, of ten men on board the outward bound steamer Egypt. It is believed the capture has been made in connection with the assassination of Lord Frederick Cavendish and Mr Burke.
George Otto Trevelyan, the newlyappointed Irish Secretary, has been reelected for Howick without opposition. ST. PETERSBURG, May 16.
News is to hand of the death of General Kaufmann, commander of the Russian army in Turkestan. CAIRO, May 16.
It has transpired that, acting under the advice of foreign Consuls, the Khedive has patched up an agreement with his Ministers, and a crisis which was imminent has thus been averted.
