OPENING OF PARLIAMENT.

SECOND EDITION

[PBESS ASSOCIATION TBIiEGtBAM.J WELLINGTON, May 18. Parliament was opened at two o’clock to-day by the Commissioners, the Hon. Sir W. Fitzherbort, Hon. Mojor Bichmond, and Hon. F. Whitaker. The Commission having been read, Sir W. Fitzherbert stated that at two o’clock tomorrow his Excellency would attend in person to disclose his reasons for calling the present session together. In the meantime it was necessary that the Bouse of Bepresentativea should elect a Speaker, and present him to the Governor at noon to-morrow.

On members reassembling in the House, a Commission was read, authorising Major Campbell to swear in members. The following members were then sworn:Messrs George, Hurst, Mitchelson, Peacock, Sir G. Grey, Dargaville, Swanson, O'Borkei Htmlin, Oardman, Whyte, Morris, Whitaker, Johnston, Bryce, Watt, Belly, Stevens, Beetham, Atkinson, Wilson (Foxton), Trimble, Levin, Buchanan (Wairarapa) Hutchinson, O. Johnston, Levestam, Hursthouse, Connelly, Shepherd, Dodson, Me Ilraith, Fitzgerald, Bolleston, Pilliet, White, Holmes, Montgomery, McMillan, Postlethwaito, Steward, Sutter, Turnbull, Bhrimski, Maoaadrew, Dick, Bracken, Green (Dunedin), Seaton, Barron, Butherford, Thompson, Feld wick, Daniels, Mason, Tawhai, Tomoana. Major Atkinson then proposed Sir G. MO’Borke as Speaker, Mr Maoandrew seconded, both speaking in eulogistic terms of his past conduct.

Mr Levestam spoke in condemnation of Sir G. M. O’Borke’* action on the Representation Bill, as trampling the law under foot.

On the vote being taken, Sir G. M, O'Botke was unanimously elected Speaker.
