Attendance at Exhibition.—The attendance at the Exhibition of those paying, exclusive cf season tickets, from April 11th to May 15th, amounted to 107,470. Thb Eiocabton Affair. —Nothing further has transpired in this matter, the police are still prcsecu ing their search for the wouldbe assassin. Jueobs’ Awabds. —The awards in several of the classes were to-day sent in, and will be published in full to-morrow. Hib Excellency the Qovebnoe.—At his farewell speech at the railway station, Sir Arthur Gordon stated that it was improbable Lady Gordon or he would ever again visit Christchurch, and spoke in eulogistic terms of the local attractions of the district and the kindness of the friends he had made here. Mbs Hampeon’s Mission. —The Ashburton Town Hall was crowded in every part on Sun-lay night, when Mrs Himpson again delivered a very impressive address, which was listened to throughout with deep interest. On Monday the midday service waswell attended, and again in the evening the hall was filled with an anxious and attentive audience. Messes Joubeet and Tw'qpeky'b Title. —At the Resident Magistrate’s Court, this morning, Mr Kalder raised the question of the validity of the projectors’ title to occupy Hagley Park. What he said was that the Governor had no power to lease the ground. The Bench did not hear argument, as they held that, no matter whether the contention was right or wrong, it did not affect the case under hearing. Abhbubton Racing Oiub.—A meeting of the committee of this- club was held at Quill’s Hotel on Saturday afternoon. A statement of accounts, showing a credit bUsnoe of £57 15j si. was laid on the table. Attention was drawn to the bad condition of? the ground, and a committee was appointed and authorised to spend £6O in putting thecourse in proper order. R U. Court Psacxice.— at this Court, witnesses in civil cases, though not subfu-ria-’d, have been allowed thsir expenses. Mr Boe-iham this morning announced that in future expanses would not be allowed to ary witnesses unless they attended in obedience to subf ocaae. Abhbubton Hunt Club. —Tbe hound* net on Batirlay last near Mr D. Jones* premises, and despite the heavy condition of the ground a capital day’s sport was enjoyed by those present, amongst the number being Messrs E. Saunders, H. X. Winter, M. Winter, Denshire, Stroutts, Crawley, Huohi-. sun and others.
MUSICAL Combination.— By special request the Burnham end Austrian band# wUI give a long and vared programme in the Exhibition building on Wednesday evening, closing with the National Anthem by both bands. ... c Fire. Shortly after noon this day a tire broke out in the malt house on the Colombo rosd a little on the Christchurch side of the property of Mr Charles Clark. It appears that a flue got over heated, and a lot of barley awaiting malting was destroyed. The men present worked vigorously to subdue the fire, but about half-past one o’clock, being fearful that it would communicate with an adjoining building, in which a quantity of malt was stored, the proprietors, Messrs Empson and Dudley, sent a messenger to Mr Harris, superintendent of the fire brigade, who was speedily iu attendance with several members of the same, and the engine Deluge and the hook and ladder apparatus. Fortunately, on arrival, it was found that the men had subdued the fire, and consequently the •ervices of the brigade were not required. With the exception of the grain destroyed, the carnage done i» but o mparately slight. Yb Olde Ekoltshb Faxbb —The various preparations necessary for the production of this attractive novelty are being vigorously prosecuted. The several tenders have all been entered into, and there is no doubt ■whatever as to its proving an entire success The reproduction of a complete street in our midst, rich with all the elaborate carvings and many gables of the Elizabethan period of architecture, cannot fail to be instructive and amusing to tho rising generation, to whom the personal inspection of what they have only hitherto seen in pictorial representation will be a great treat. The application for stalls are stated to bo coming in freely, and as the time open for obtaining same is short, early application is necesaary. . . Belfast.—A very important sale 11 an- i nounced for to-morrow, when the New i Zealand Doan and Mereait le Agency Company (Limited) will offer by auction the well i known Belfast property, which, for the purpose of sale, is divided into 120 building ( allotments, which comprise Belfast town ; ( and forty-tbrfe farms, comprising Belfast i estate. The property is very highly com- < mended, and has many advantages, both of 1 position and soil, which we have no doubt ( will attract many new arrivals and others ( seeking sites either for houses or places of 1 business- The sale takes place at Messrs i Ford and Co.’s Land Bala Booms, at two o’clock. Fl\xton School —The Flaxton School t Committee met on Friday evening to receive i applications for a master and mistress for the g main school. Eleven applications were re- p oeived for tho appointment of master, and v five for that of mistress. After going care- i; fully over the testimonials of each applicant, o it was oecided to appoint Mr and Mrs Wilmot t of the Loburn school master and mistress, 1 subject to the approval of the Board of r Education, n Ashburton Magistrate's Court. —At s this Court on Monday, before his Worship h the Mayor, James Blumont, E. Harrison, H, b Martin and James Edwards were charged s with drunkenness, and fined respectively 10s, li ss, 20s and ss. A first offender was dismissed n with a caution. h Capture of a Lunatic. —Yesterday, at t Feruside, Constable Gaffney, of Kangiora, s succeeded in securing J.mes Taylor, an inmate of the Bunny side Asylum, who escaped thence v on tho 11th inst. I Chbistohuroh Poultry Show.—At a b meeting of the above society, held at Mr Baahford’s restaurant last evening, some discussion arose as to the reasons why the proposed poultry show on the Queen’s Birthday "■ should not be carried out. Tho secretary 0 having explained that the Hall could not be P obtained on that day, and also that many large exhibitors declined to show onjthat day, Jj it was ultimately agreed by a majority of 24 1 to 16 that the action of the committee in 8 arranging for the show to be held at the Ex s hibition building in June next be approved, 0 it being stated that the promoters have agreed to hand over to the society one-third of their a takings each day so long as the show lasts. 8 Collision.—A collision occurred near the y Addington Bail way gates, between a drog g driven by Mr Me Alpine, and containing a j. party of gentlemen returning from a private coursing meeting at Lansdowne yesterday j, afternoon, and a gig driven by aMr Scobie. j The gig ran into the drag leaders, one of the shafts entering the nff horse’s flank Mr MoAlpine was thrown from his seat, but escaped unhurt, his fall being broken by falling on ' one of the horses. The two leaders broke their j. traces and dashed down the road, and ran j into the police trap conveying prisoner# to , Addington, the shafts of which vehicle were broken, the harness damaged, and one of the seats lost. The horses were seou'ed by Con- , stable Davey, who brought them to Christchurch. It is stated that no blame attaches to the driver of the drag, who was well on his own side of the road. Little River District School. —An entertainment was given at Little River on Wednesday evening last in the schoolroom, c under the management of the district school t committee, in aid of the incidental expenses. The attendance was large, the room being t crowded. Mr W. Coop presided. The i chairman opened the proceedings by stating ( that during last winter a portion of the j boundary fence had been washed away and I had to be re-erected. The committee had also i applied for and obtained from the Akaroa 1 Domain Board a large number of trees, which ] were planted. On application to the Educa- 1 tion Board for payment, the Board refused ] to pay, on the ground that tho work had been 1 done without its sanction, and was unauthorised. The committee had therefore deter- i mined to give an entertainment to enable it i to pay off the debt incurred. The ladies of the district and others had readily come forward to assist, and seeing the large attendance he had no doubt the object of the committee would ba attained. A largo and varied programme, consisting of piano solos, singing, and reading was gone through, and each item duly appreciated. The playing of Mrs Buchanan and Mrs Hay was much admired, as was also tho singing of Mr Chatteris (who came from Christchurch to assist) and Mr Fergusson, as well as the reading by Captain Curling of Tennyson’s ode, “ The Siege of Lucknow.” A vote of thanks to the ladies and gentlemen who had kindly given their services, and to tho chairman, brought to a conclusion the bestattended entertainment ever given at Little Elver, After the entertainment tho room was cleared for dancing, which was kept up with much spirit until an early hour in the morning.
