FURTHER PARTICULARS.
DEATH OF OAPPAIN MILLS. Monday. After the arrival of the lifeboat at the wharf, some seven or eight men had been picked up, but Oaptain Mills, the Harbormaster, died in a few minutes after he came on shore. Altogether seven men, including Oaptain Mills, are accounted for as missing, but it is almost certain that more men were drowned. The event has quite upset the people of Timaru. The police and others aro now searching along the beach to pick up bodies. The names of the men misting are : Robert Gardner, mate of the City of Perth. D. McLean, the carpenter of the same vessel. William MoLaren, waterman, of Timaru. Emanuel Neilson, boatman, of Timaru. Martin Beach, boatman, of Timaru. Harry McDonald, boatman, of Timaru. Alexander Mills, the Harbormaster. The two wrecked vessels have now been driven right into the shore, and are likely soon to bretk up. The sea has moderated, and search parties are out all along the beach trying to recover the bodies of the drowned men. The scene yesterday was a terrible one ; it has quite unfitted people for business today. The funeral of Captain Mills will take place to morrow, when all the business places in the town will bo closed. The Harbor Board held 6 special meeting to day, and appointed William Oollis Harbormaster, to take temporary charge of the port. The City of Perth arrived at Lyttelton on March 12th, having left London on December 3rd, 1881. It was her first visit to Lyttelton, and no further description will be considered necessary to establish the foot that she i»u fine ship than to state she was one cf the well-known City Line. On her arrival in the Port of Lyttelton, as well as at where she was wrecked, she was commanded by Oapt. MacDonald. On April 17th she left Lyttelton for Timaru to discharge a portion of her cargo, and to load for Home on account of the N.Z G.A. and M. Company. She waste sail on Friday next for London.
The New Zealand Shipping Company’s chartered ship Bonvonue, Captain McGowan, arrived from Newcastle at Lyttleton on April 6th. She proceeded to Timaru, and wa» to sail thence to Port Chalmers on Saturday.
