[PIiESS ASSOCIATION TBLEGBAM ] AUCKLAND, May 10. The census taken by the Early Closing Association of shops in Auckland keeping open after seven o'clock at night, gave the number of 372 shops, employing 751 men and women. The Parnell Borough Oounoil reoeived a letter from sundry ratepayers, petitioning against proposed borrowing for drainage and water, on the ground that an immense majority of ratepayers were opposed to it, and because the manner of polling was informal, illegal, and oorrupt. The letter was considered libellous, [and, the Council refused to receive it.

Mrs Coles' purse, containing £lB, was found to-day at the boarding house where the robbery was alleged to have taken place, having apparently been mislaid. Sir Geo. Grey has arrived in town from Kawau, and it is understood he leaves for Wellington to-morrow. CoL Whitmore is at present in Auckland. NEW PLYMOUTH, May 10.

The case of Gallagher, charged with killing a Native at Manutahi is still going on. The following witnesses were examined : Enos Gallagher, Constable Connell, James Parker, P. G. Baker, O. Mullins, and Martin MoMahon. The Court has adjourned until tomorrow morning.

At the South Canterbury coursing meeting at Waimate to-day, Mr D. M. Boss's Bonnie Flaneur won the Puppy Stakes, and Turn. bull's Duohess of Oonnaught the Members* Plate.

The South Canterbury Athletio Club's sports oommenoed today. A. F. Pigeon won the Ladies' Steeplechase Cup, F. N. Bobinson the 100 yards and half-mile flat raoo ; E. R. Pigeon the two miles walking race.

DUNEDIN, May 10. A grand fashionable marriage took place to-day at St. Paul's. The bride was Miss Warren, the granddaughter of the Hon. M. Holmes, and the bridegroom Mr J. B. Piatt, son of Mr Piatt, M.P., Oldham, England. A very large assembly of the elite attended. The honeymoon will be spent at Awamoa, near Oamaru.

The Taieri "Advocate" has the authority of Mr Fulton, M.H.8., for stating that he has positively deolined the Chairmanship of Committees, and intends to adhere to this reßolution.

A fatal accident occurred at Tnapeka Mouth on Monday to the son of Mr John Hughes, a boy aged twelve years. He was on the top of a drayload of corn, when the horse was moved forward, and suddenly stopped, whioh caused the youth to lose his balance and fall upon a pitohfork, the point of whioh was protruding upward, and pierced his temple between the ear and eye. The little fellow expired three hours after the accident
