They pourtray soenes in New Zoaland, England, Europe and Algeria, and are in the artist's best style, whioh is saying a good deal. One or two are gems in their line. These pictures will be turther noticed in a future issue. Accident —William Rogers, a resident of Templeton, whilst driving a oart on Tuesday evening near his house, fell out of the same and was somewhat badly injure*; Several of his ribs are said to be broken, but his injuries were promptly attended to. Bun Ovbb.— Yesterday afternoon a valuable red greyhound dog puppy was run over by a patsing vehicle near the Hospital, one of its hind legs being broken noar the hip. A gentleman resident in Oxford terrace humanely obarged his double-barrelled gun and put the poor animal out of its misery. ASHBTJBTON HOBTIOCLTUBAIi SOOIBTY. —A meeting of the committee of this society was held on Tuesday evening, when, with a view to inorease competition in the various classes, it was deoided to inorease the prize money for many of the exhibits, more especially in the open olasses.

Bangioba Volunteer Fibb Bbigadb.— At the fortnightly meeting of this brigade on Monday evening, Messrs W. Wadey and J. MoAleer were appointed assistant branchmen, being eleoted by the members of the brigade. It was resolved to join in the torohlight prooession at Ohriitchuroh on the 18th. Mining Accident. —Henry Dafty, who has been employed at the Whiteoliffa Coal Mines, owned by Mr Ford, into the Hospital yesterday, suffering from the the effeots of an explosion. Whilst tamping a blast, the charge exploded, scorching him about the face and eyes and injuring his left arm. He is doing as well as possible. AKABOA STEEPLECHASE MEETING.—|A meeting of the stewards of this meeting was held at Akaroa, on Tuesday evening. The entries for all the events had closed the previous evening, and the result was so unsatisfactory that it was resolved that the meeting be abandoned, and a sub committee was appointed to pay off the expenses incurred .

Looac, Option.—The polling for the Tinwald distriot took place on Tuesday last with the following result:—For an increase of publicans' licenses 34, against 16 ; fo an increase of New Zealand wine licenses 29, against 13 ; for an increase of accommodation licenses 26, against 17; for an inorease of bottle licences 23, against 18. It will be seen that the polling resulted in favor of an inorease of all the licenses. IBEXAND AND SeIP-GoVBBNMBNT—The following notice of motion has been given by Mr A. T. Clark in the Victorian Assembly : " That an address bo presented to Her Majesty the Queen, praying her to grant self government to Ireland, as we feel as. sured that such an equitable proceeding would for ever oement the unity of a mighty nation, and secure the undying gratitude and loyalty of the people of Ireland."

The Licensing Act.—ln the oases in which orders are made against persons for excessive drinking, on the notice issued is reprinted the portions of this Act which render publicans liable for an offence against such order to a penalty not exceeding £lO, and private individuals who may even give or assist prohibited persona to obtain liquor to a penalty not exceeding £5. The latter provision may not be so generally known as the former.

Bast Cheistchtjbch Football Olttb.— A special general meeting of the members of the above club was held last evening at halfpast seven o'olook at the Eastern Hotel. There was a good attendance. Mr Henry was voted to the chair. Mr F. Fuller was unanimously chosen as captain of the olub, Mr F. D. Kesteven being elected seoretary. Messrs F. Fuller and F. D. Kesteven were eleoted as delegates to the Canterbury Bugby Union. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the meeting.

Runaway,—Last evening about 7 o'olook, a horse and buggy, minus the driver, came past the Hospital at a rapid pace, and although the terrace was well sprinkled with passing vehicles, no accident occurred, and whilst on the asphalte near the office of this paper it was secured and taken to Terrell's stables, fortunately not the slightest damage resulted. It appears that the party who hired the horse and trap left it unattended, and the presumption is that the horse took fright at some passing object and bolted homewards.

Escaped Lunatic. The police were apprised by telephone at half-past nine o'olock last evening, that an inmate of the Sunnyside Asylum, named James Taylor, a native of Scotland, twenty-five yearß of age, had escaped from that institution. He was reported as missing at 6.30 in the evening, having got out of a window, and is desoribed as being dressed in a grey suit and billycock hat. Taylor was oommitted from Timaru.

Manbbvillb and Ranghoba Dbainaqe District, A sitting of the Assessment Court, Mr C. Whitefoord, R.M., judge, was held at the Courthouse, Rangiora, on Tuesday, to hear objections to the valuation list of this district. Three appeals had been made, but as the Court was not in possession of the notices, the hearing of tbe objections _ was adjourned for a fortnight, for the parties to prove that they had sent notices in proper form to the Chairman of the Board.

Templbtow.—The monthly meetingof the above school committee was held in the Library on Monday evening. Members present —Mestri 8. Bailey (chairman), Benjamin, Jones, Kissel, Luoook and Palmer. A letter was received from the master (Mr Wright), asking for some repairs to be done to the school house, and for a table for the infants' room. A list was also handed in of those children who have not put in half the number of attendances for the quarter ending Maroh 31st, 1882, and year ending Deoember 31st, 1881. Messrs Benjamin, Lucock and Kissel were .appointed as a sub committee to have the necessary repairs carried out, and also to see to several other matters which required attending to. With referenoe to the attendance list, it was deoided to get the assistance of the .police in enforcing the compulsory olauses of the Education Act. The ohairman was authorised to prepare the usual notices to be served on the parents. Arhbueion Sohooh Committee .—The monthly meeting of this committee was held on Tuesday evening. A letter was read from the Ohristohcrch Education Board, stating that Mr Chichester had been appointed third to the Ashburton Borough Bohool. Prom a tabulated return laid on the table of the attendance in the North Canterbury district for the past quarter, it was seen that the number of pupils on the roll of the Ashburton sohool at the commencement of the quarter was 300, and at the end of the quarter 456, the average weekly attendance being 327. The head master's report was read and received. Messrs St. Hill and Williamson wore appointed a visiting committee. Some of the school furniture having been borrowed for use in St. Stephen's Church last Sunday evening without the sanction of the ohairman or secretary, the matter oame up for discussion, and it was resolved that in future the school furniture be not taken without the sanotion of the chairman or secretary.
