WAIKUKU.

Thursday was quite an important day in the annals of this village. In honor of the school anniversary, Mr and Mrs McDonald invited the parents, with their families, to spend the day at Invercoe, their residence. Young and old responded right heartily, and by the time appointed for the commencement of the day’s amusement there was a large number present, who were most hospitably entertained. A lengthy programme of sports was gone through, racing, jumping, &c., occupying many, while others enjoyed the usual innocent games which are habitual to such gatherings. All the events were well contested, and as there were many prizes few were disappointed. The principal prize - takers among the girls were Fanny Morriss, Maggie Ligget, Charlotte Skevington, Louisa Tinkler, and Jane Skevington ; while among the boys James Skevington, John McDonald, B. Orchard, O. Tinkler, and J. Smyth were to the fore. The sack race caused much amusement, as a little fellow, Drew, whose height scarcely exceeded that of his sack, won easily. In the married men’s race, Mr McDonald was first, with Mr Liggit and Rev. O. H. Gusset second and third respectively. After the programme had been exhausted, and all bad regaled themselves with the many good things so liberally provided, an adjournment was made to the schoolroom, where, under the presidency of Mr McDonald, chairman of the school committee, an entertainment was given, the following ladies and gentlemen taking part— Misses Cole, Adams, and Bowie, and Messrs McDonald, Fulton, Prestney, and Bait. After votes of thanks, the National Anthem was sung, and hearty cheers having been given the audience, which was so large that scarce standing room was left, dispersed, well pleased with their day’s amusement. During the entertainment the prizes were distributed to those successful at the examination held by Mr Thompson, of Mount Grey Downs.
