The speech promised measures for law reform, the amendment of the Companies Statute, marine service and defences of the colony, public health, food adulteration, mining on private property, and local government. The speech also alludes to the attempt on the life of the Queen. Mr Blackett moved the Addreas-in-iteply, Mr Connor seconded. A B’ll has been drafted creating two political under-sccretarys to assist the Minister of Railways, both being members of Parliament.
The committee of enquiry into tho Melbourne Hospital state that tho condition of the place is capable of much improvement. The steamers Queenecliffa and Black Eagle collided on the 25th. Four plates of the Queensliffe were damaged. Colonel Hutton recommends the disbandment of the Volunteers with the view of a thorough reorganisation. SYDNEY, April 27. A report of tho Mayor to the City Council states that all the theatres in Sydney except the Gaiety are unsatisfactory as regards ventilation and exits in case of danger.
The Diocesan Synod is convened for the 9th of May, when the question of election of a new Bishop will be considered. According to the official report received from London, tUe number of outrages committed by tho natives in the Western Pacific Islands during six months of lust year was twenty-three. An importer named Joseph Collins has been committed for trial for forging Krug’s champagne labels. Advices from the interior report that the drought lasted sixteen months. Great privation ensued in consequence. The Governor decided to summon Parliament to consider the distress of the farmers, Forsyth, the missing defendant in the conspiracy care, has been declared bankrupt by bis creditors. The trial case against Barker, Hicks, Dubarry, Forsyth, and Morrison, is proceeding. The evidence for the Crown was completed on the 25tb.
