Justices Grove and Huddleston gave judgment against defendant, to force him into bankruptcy, so as to vacate hie seat in the House of Commons.

The Pope declares he will not receive the Emperor Krancis Joseph at the Vatican if the emperor visits King Humbert at Borne, Lord Erskine died on the 29th ult.

For the week ending April Ist no lets than three cold blooded murders were committed in San Francisco. John Kellala cut his wife’s throat in a fit of jealousy ; Wm. MoCornish shot his quondam friend Hugh Money ; and J. Hambun, a gambler, shot John M. Hissey, another of the same kidney. The latter fell dead in the middle of Kearney street. Epizootic is epidemic in Argrantina, Yellow fever is increasing in Arizona, and the fights between the .citizens and the ruffians known as cow-boys are of the bloodiest kind.

Hanlan, the Toronto oarsman, defeated Boyd at Newcastle-on-Tyne on April the 3rd by four boats' lengths. Boyd won the toss for position, and chose the north side of the river. Edmunds’ Polygamy Bill passed Congress on the 14th by a vote of 199 to 42. By its provisions, all polygamists are disfranchised and rendered ineligible to hold office. Nearly forty persons perished, Sunday law is being held constitutional by the Supreme Court of California. It came into operation in that State on the 19th nit. A powerful organisation, called the League of Freedom, was formed to resist its enforcement. The law is directed chiefly at saloons and places of amusement, but the League, in order to make the enactment odious, will cause the arrest of everyone engaged in an unnecessary occupation on the first day of the week.

So many frauds have been discovered about the Mexican claims business that the United States Government has made an agreement with Mexico in order to prevent the Troas ary of the latter country being plundered by American claimants. The two chief awards by the Mexican claims commission amounted to 12,000,000 dollars, and were obtained by perjury. The Garfield monument fund reached 106,000 dollars.

Smallpox continues to make terrible havoc in Pennsylvania. It is spreading rapidly. A young Englishman named Owens was lynched at Papa Bay, Florida, being hanged to a tree in the Court House yard by a mob. He had attacked a young lady for some cause and stabbed her nearly to death. In personal appearance he was said to exactly resemble Guitoau.

Mr Smyth, of Barbarilie House, near Ellanstown, County Meath, has written to Mr Gladstone concerning the assassination of his sister-in-law. He says—“ Your practical adhesion to the principle that force is no remedy in the case of Irish savagery has culminated in making it necessary for a Land League assassin to murder my sister in-law at noon day. I lay the guilt of that deed of blood at your door in the face of the who!© country.” Mr Gladstone, in replying, assures Mr Smythe of his hearty sympathy, and is confident Mr Smythe will readily understand why he does not notice his charges.

The anti-Chinese Bill, prepared particularly in the interest of the Pacific coast, limiting Chinese immigation to the United ictates for twenty years, and passed by both Houses of Congress on the 22nd ult., was vetoed by President Arthur on the ground that he considered twenty years too long a time. Oxford won the University boat race on the Ist by six lengths. The Cambridge craw were first to come out on the river. They took the Middlesex side. The final betting was five to one on Oxford. The boats started at one minute past one o’clock. Cambridge was first to take the water, and immediately led by half a boat's length, but was caught and passed by the Oxford boat before five yards had been traversed. At the Soap Works, a mile end a half from the starting point the Oxford craw were loading by throe lengths. At Hammersmith bridge, ‘.wo furlongs further on, they were four lengths in front of Cambridge, and off Chiswick wail the latter seemed to be fairly dona, while the Oxford crew finished in good form, and they “won as they pleased.” Tha Cambridge men were exhausted at tho finish, and their rowing was irregular. Tho time of tha Oxford men was 20min 12sec ; that of tho Cambridge 20min 37sec. Public feeling in England is increasing in hostility to the Channel project. The Government is severely censured in many quarters for allowing the project to proceed as far as it has already done. Iu the opinion of eminent geologists, moreover, the construction of the tunnel is impossible. Parliament is likely to put an end to the work at anv moment.
