THE MINISTER FOR LANDS.
DEPUTATION. A deputation from the Akaroa County Council, comprising Messrs Baker and Joblin, waited on the Hon. Wm. Eolleston yesterday with regard to the reclamation of Lake Ellesmere, and also as to the necessity of erecting protective works on the Akaroa railway to prevent the washing away of portions of the line. The deputation represented to the Minister that new information had been obtained at the instance of the County Council, which showed that one element of the problem in the past had been very much overlooked, viz., the inflow of salt water to the lake. They had devoted a large amount of time to collecting evidence on the subject, and plans had also been made which would be laid before the Government. The deputation also strongly represented that the railway line was in danger of being washed away unless some works were at once undertaken to prevent it They would bo prepared to give the Government full information on the subject and to transmit plans, Ac. The Minister said the representations of the deputation should receive full consideration at the hands of the Government.
