NEWS OF THE DAY.
Forestry.—A sanctuary meeting was held at the Foresters' Hall last evening, when the ordinary routine of business was transacted, and after enjoying a pleasant evening with aones and recitations, the meating closed. Lighting Kiccabton KoAD.—The Selwyn County Council, at its meeting this morning, decided to undertake the lighting and mamtenance of five lamps on the Kiccarton road, be tween the hospital and the Kiccarton Hotel, on condition that the residents of Kiccarton provided tho lamps aiad the gas main. Selwtn County Council.—The Council hold an ordinary meeting this morning, and transacted a good dial of miscellaneous business, particulars of which will be found in another column. Sunday School Union—Mr C. E. Button will read a paper on "The Mission of Sunday S.hools" on Thursday evening, in the Oddfeliows' Chambers. Lichfield street, when all Sunday-school teachers are invited to attend. TUNDBBS ACCEPTED BY DRAINA»B BOARD —The acceptance of the respective tenders of Mesirs J. A. Kodpath, J. Brightling and M. MoNamara, is detailed in a report of yesterday's meeting. Tkmpbbancb Demonstration. —A graud temperance gathering in aid of a deoeased brother will be given in the Exhibition building thia evening. A oapital programme has been arranged for the occasion. Cathedral Organ.—The opening of the above will be celebrated this evening by a speoal service at 7.30 p.m., when Mr Wells will play several pieces on it. The sermon will be preached by the Primate. Ashburton Council. —The eleotion to fill the extraordinary vaoanoy in the Borough Oouncil took place yesterday and resulted as follows:—R. Bird, 104 ;G. M. Robinson, 65. The former was therefore elected. Visiting Justices.—The following visiting justices have been appointed :—Addington, Mr Beetham, B.M, ; Ashburton, Timaru ana Waimate, Mr Joseph Beswick, B.M. ; Ashburton, Mr John Grigg, J.P.; Kaikoura, Mr John Est ourt Persons, J.P ; Lyttelton, Mr John Ollivier, R M.; and Waimate, Mr Jobn Manchester, J P. Sudden Death.—A man named William Kennedy, in the employ of Mr Donald McLean, at Laghmor, was arrested on Saturday evening laat on a charge of drunkenness, and was subsequently looked up. On Sunday morning when one of the constables went to see him he was found very ill, and a doctor was immediately sent for. He was oonveyed to the Hospital in a cab, and on his way took a fit and died. An inquest concerning his death was held yesterday.
Caledonian Society.—The first annual meeting of the Canterbury Caledonian Society was held last evening in the rooms of P. Cunningham, Mr Cunningham in the chair. The chairman explained briefly what had been done up to date, and stated that the business of the meeting was to eleot the office-bearers by ballot. While the sotutiny of votes was being made, a conversational discussion took place as to the steps which should be taken to carry out the objects for which the society had been formed. It was resolved that it be an instruction to the direotora to make arrangements for the giving of a concert at an ea'ly date at which Scotch music should be performed. The meeting also expressed an opinion favorable to the foundation of a scholarship to be bestowed upon a boy or girl attending the primary schools, to be expended in defraying the cost of his or her education at one of the seoondary schools in the district. The result of the voting was then announced as follows :—President: Mr P. Cunningham. Vice-presidents : Mr H. A. Watt and Dr. Stewart. Directors : Meers John Anderson, jun., Wm. Boag, James Campbell, H. A. O, Fergusson, G-. H. Gordon, J. S. Guthrie, A. Kirk, T. S. Lambert, A. McKae, G. Mackay, John Mcßetb, Dan. Bocae, Struan Bobertson, B. Sutherland, A, O. Wilson. Auditors—Mersrs T. B. Craig and A. F. MoKay. Mr Cunningham, in returning thanks tor the honor the society had done him in electing him first president, announced that he had decided to offer the sum of £25 to be expended in promoting one of the objects for which the oooiety had been formed, and he wished it to be called " The Caledonian Booiety of Canterbury Scholarship." Mr A. Mcßne then stated that he wished to make a donation of £5, V,> be expended in recognition of special acts of bravery in saving life in New Zealand or New Zealand waters. Votes of thanks were passed to Messrs Cunningham and Moßae for their handsome donations. After transacting some formal business the meeting separated. The Exhibition.—There was a fairly good attendance at the Exhibition yesterday. The eleotion of the jurors in the various classes was proceeded with, bat the result will not be known until to-morrow. The Austrian band played a capital selection of musio in the afternoon in the Wellington Octagon, and in the evening in the Oonoert Hall. Arrangements have been made for holding a flower show on Wednesday and Thursday. The exhibits will be staged in the New Zealand and British Courts and in the Entrance Hall.
Theatbb Boyal.—The repetition of " The Piratea of Feozance" last night at the theatre drew a very large houie, every part being well filled. The pieoe went capitally from first to last. The many friends of Miss Maggie Moore were pleased to find that she had recovered somewhat from her very severe cold, as she sang and acted in the part of Bath with all the verve and success which ha? distinguished her performance. The rest of the characters were well filled, and as a whole, the opera went with much spirit. To-night, whioh is the last of the season, a grand programme is announced. " The Pirates " entire will ba played, followed by a concert, in which Miss Rees, Miss Osborne, Mdlle. Navaro, Signori Riccardi and Verdi, and Messrs Beaumont and Vernon will appear. Mr J. O Williamson will on this occasion appear as Sergeant Murphy in the opera, and the performance will be under the patronage of his Ercellenoy the Governor and Lady Gordon, who have signified their intention of being present. In consequence of the length of the programme the overture will be played at 7.45 p.m.
Papantjt Coubsino Club.—A well-at-te ded meeting of this olub was held laet night at the Sawyers' Arms Hotel, Papanui. The following are the amounts paid away to tho winners of the several stakes :—Puppy Stokes, Mr Lawrence's Bannorman and Mr McDonnell's Orange Lightning, divided £7 Is 9d each ; Mr Llewellyn's Taraban, £2 17s 3d. Stales, Mr BavenhiU's Starlight and Mr D. O'Brien's Wizard, divided £7 Us 3d each ; Mr Llewelyn, £1 18j 3d. A vote of thanks was unanimously acoorded to those gentlemen who had so kindly placed their land at the disposal of the club, after which the meeting adjourned. LO.O F„ M.D., Kaiapoi—At a meeting of members held on Friday eve ning, it was resolved to hold a ball on the Queen's birthday for the purpose of olearing a deficit on last anniversary celebration. Arrangements were made for the services of an effioient band for the oocasion, and it is expected that the friends of the order will assist in bringing about the object sought to be attained. Attboba Atjstbalis.—These lights were most brilliant as seen from Akaroa on the night of the 20th, commencing soon after seven o'clock, and assuming all the colors of the rainbow, the rays at times being yttj bright, from a silver oolor to the richest orimson, a beautiful contrast was formed for a time by a heavy bank of clouds coming up frcm the siu'-west, but whioh were followed by a heavy downpour of rain. Ohttbch op England Cbmbtbby Boabd.— The statement of accounts for the year ending March 31st shows rooeipts to the amount of £607 10s, including overdraft to the extent of £133 17s 61. The number of burials for
the year was 174, comprising 58 male adults 41 male ohildren, 35 female adults, and 40 female children. The previous year the tot»l was 180 The total number of burials frr m April, 1851, to March, 1882, has been 3458. The foregoing refers to the parishes of St. Luke's, St. Miohael's, and St. John's.
