CANTERBURY COLLEGE.
An ordinary meeting of the Canterbury College Board of Governors was held yesterday afternoon at three o'clock. Present — Mr W. Montgomery, M.H.B. (chairman), the Hon. E. O. J. Stevens, Messrs J. D. Eoys, E. Wakefield, J. V. O. Veel, H. J. Tancred, R. W. Fereday, W. Reeves, X. W. Maude, H. P. Lance, and the Eev. O. JVaser. The Chairman reported that a letter had been received from the Minister for Eiucation stating that the sum o! £2OO which had b"en applied for in aid of the Girls' High School had been placed on the estimates. Since last meeting the committee had carried out the instructions of the Board, and appainted a competent assistant-master for the School of Art. The attendance at this school was as follows :—At morning classes, 28 ; at evening classes, 63 ; also, 34 from the Boys' High Sohool and 15 from the Girls' High Sohool. He might mention that in Dunedin 56 students attended the morning classes of the Sohool of Art and 184 the evening classes. Considering the relative population of the two places it might be estimated that the attondanca at the Sohool of Art in Chriatchurch would be at least 40 in the morning and 125 in the evening. In Dunedin the total number that received instruction in or through the agency of the School of Art during the yoar 1881 was 6311, of whom 5478 were pupils of publio schools. 86 students in training, 61 teaohers and pupil teachers, 56 students who attended the afternoon classes, and 184 students who attended the evening classes. It was not unlikely that tho North Canterbury Board of Education would apply to the Board to obtain the servioes of the head-master of the sohool to supervise instruction in drawing in the cjmmon schools, and probably the Board would feel disposed to ngree to the proposal on oondition that the efficiency of the Bobool of Art was not in any way interfered with. Authority was given to the chairman to affix the seal of the College to certain certificates of title to land purohased from the pastoral reserves. The Board then went into committee to consider the question of the purchase of threu quarters of an acre of land, and also the question of the transfer of security for money lent to tho Bank of New South Wales. Resolutions were reported and approved, Mr Stevens said he had received a ]£*** from the headmaster of the Boyß' Hign School inviting him, as one of the governors, to assist in obtaining donations of money and books, as well as annual subscriptions, for the maintenance of a library in connection with the Boys' High Sohool. It did not appear to him that it was one of the privileges of the Governors to establish a library for the Boys High School, nor yet to maintain it after it was started. He wished to know, however, whether it would be competent for them.to discuss the propriety of devoting some of the funds appertaining to the Boys' High School to such a purpose. It was decided that the matter should be referred to the Coll.-ge oommittee for tnelr report, to bo submitted at next meetingThis was all the business, and the Board adjourned.
