FOOTBALL.

OHBIBTGHUBOH FOOTBALL CLUB. On Saturday afternoon the opening game of the season took place in Cranmer square, between sides picked from members of:this Club. One portion, wearing red and black, the Club's colours, were officered by A. H. Anderson, the captain ; while the other, in blue and white, were under Q. JJ. Helmore's oommand. At first it was intended to select the players alphabetically from A to Land from MtoZ, but a modification of this plan was found necessary. The ground was dry and firm, but rough, and abounding in uneven patches from last season's cricket pitohes. The long grass was also very slippery. It was twenty minutes past three o'clock when tho match began, and members would do well to roll up earlier in future, practising punctually and regularly, bo as to acquire the habit of playing in a compact and welldrilled body, that they may acquit them, selves valiantly in the annual match against Dunedin, whioh usually comes off'towards the latter end of the season; as well as in the proposed Exhibition contest. The Blues won the toss on Saturday,. the play opening by Anderson's kicking off for the Beds, who were a stouter lot of fellows than their opponents, and seemed to be much faster, especially in the loose scrimmages. The Beds had alio excellent backs. Twopeny fought pluckily on the side of the Bloet, whose forwards showed good play. From the outset the Beds bad things pretty much their own way, keeping tho ball well down towards the enemies' goal. For the commencement of the season the game was fast, and the average form on both Bides gave promise of scientific play after a week or two's practice. On the side of the Beds, W. J. Cotterill and H. H. Lee did sterling service as backs ; Helmore and J; Hall upholding the honor of the Blues in the same capacity, while W. V. Millton and M. H. Lewin struggled manfully as forwards, Some capital bits of running occurred in the final spell of the matoh, which resulted in a victory for the Beds with six tries to nothing. Of these Alabaster scored one, W. Cotterill two, J. O'Donnell (U.F.0., Danedin) one, and Konvig two ; but no goal was kicked.

BAST OHBISTOHOBCH FOOTBALL OLUB. The opening matoh was played on Saturday, tho weather being rather warm for football. Only a moderate number of members turned up to hunt the leather. Anyhow for the first game of the season an enjoyable afternoon's play was indulged in, the sides being A to H, numbering 15, vlto Z, numbering 14 After four spells of twenty-five minutes the former stood victors by two tries to nil. It is intended to take steps to form a new football club in the city to play the association game, as some footballers do not like the Bugby game.
