THE LYTTELTON BRASS BAND.
To the Editor of the Olole.
Sir, —Through your oourtesy I would ask the favor of a space in your valuable columns to direct the attention of the ratepayers of Lyttelton to a matter which 1 venture to think is worthy of their consideration. I allude to too munificent gift which has been recently made to the ratepayers of this town in the shape of a number of valuable brass band instruments by the members of tte Lyttelton i'and, and which, when more generally known, will be the better appreciated. The promoters have gone to a great amount of trouble in establishing an institution which has on many occasions added very considerably to the pleasure and enjoyment of the residents of this town, and it is worthy of note that whenever their assistance has been required for any charitable purpose how promptly they have responded on those oocasions.
.Now, sir, as I am informed that subscription lis*a have just bsen opened for the purpose (f raising tho necessary funds for tha purchase of uniforms, I think a fitting opportunity is thus afforded to the ratepayers of manifesting their appreciation of this Institution in a practical way, in return for the valuable gift which is held In trust for them by the Borough Council, and also for the past efforts of the bacdin catering so successfully for their amusement, by contiibuting generously tow»rds the "uniform fund." As one who has watched the progress of this band since its establishment with tho liveliest interest, I can state unhesitatingly that it is an institution of which the Lyttelton public may justly feel proud, and I sincerely hope tbat the movument which has just been set on foot will reoeive the warm support and encouragement if all Lytteltonians.
Trusting these few remarks may inspire my fellow townsmen to come forward with liberal donations, and apologising for having trespassed so much on your valuable space, I am, &c , RATEPAYER. Lyttelton, April 17th, 18S2.
To the Editor of the Globe.
Sin, —The case of Cookson v Baatty, for the sum of £lO, tha B.M. gave a decision in favor of the ddfendant, and the latter has placed the amount in the hands of the Hev. Mr Watson, to dispose of as he may think fit.
