THE MAYOR’S BALL.

The ball given by his Worship the Mayor last night will long be remembered as one of the most enjoyable, as well as the most perfect in its arrangements, that has ever been given in Canterbury. As already stated, the number of invitations issued numbered 700, and nearly all accepted. The scene in the Art Gallery, when all were assembled, was one such as has hardly ever been seen here before. The gay dresses of the ladies commingling in color with the uniforms and black coats of the gentlemen, together with the pictures adorning the walls all went to make up a scene that will long be remembered by those present. The dancing to the music of the Austrian band took place in the Art Gallery, the concert room being set apart for the supper, which, under the able catering of Mr J. W. Morton, comprised every delicacy that could be wished for. Shortly after nine o’clock the ball was opened by Lady Gordon and the Mayor, Oapt. Knollys, AD. 0., dancing with Mrs Ruddenklau. The music was perfect, the floor splendid, and the supper superb, what more could mortal desire. The arrangements were most complete, and reflected the utmost credit alike on the princely hospitality of his Worship and the gentlemen who assisted him in carrying out the details. Dancing was kept up until an early hour, and the Mayor’s ball of 1882 was over, to remain for a long time a happy memory in the minds of many who attended it.
