[PBS PBBEI ASSOCIATION.J AUCKLAND, April IS. Dishonesty- ’* William Welsh was charged with a breach of the Shipping Act, by travelling in the steamer Penguin without paying his fare. The prisoner got a remand, as he said he had property at Taranaki. The Magistrate said he must pay or go to prison. New Harbour Loan. At a meeting of the Harbor Board, a draft Bill for a new loan of £130,000 was approved, and a schedule of works was approved. £120,000 is for a graving dock. WELLINGTON, April 13. The College. The number of pupils at the Wellington College has increased to such an extent that the building will have to be enlarged before many more can be accommodated. HOKITIKA, April 13. CrimeThe Supreme Court was opened to-day by Chief-Justice Precdergast. There was only one case, P. J. Humphreys, for larceny. The prisoner pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to eighteen months’ hard labor. His Honor congratulated the Grand Jury on the lightness of the calendar, and also on the prospects of a largely increased population. He trusted that the increase of population would not be attended by an increase of crime. The Few FindThree more claims are on the gold at the new rush, two of which are on the east side of the Boss road. The population is gradually increasing. TIMAEU, April 13. The Harbour Board. At the Harbor Board to-day the tender of Messrs Guthrie and Lsrnach for the supply of 1200 tons of cement at £4 lie lid per con was accepted, and that of H. Mackenzie, of Dunedin, for the construction of additional wharfage for £2632 19s. The Board arranged for a meeting with Henry Hoare, the representative of' a largs London financier, re raising a loan to complete the works. DUNEDIN, April 13. Correction. The statement that Mr Shand bought the whole of the Edendale estate is corrected. He bought the homestead with about 3000 acres. The company still own 90,000 acres of the estate, A Road Steamer. A new road engine was tried hero to day with every success. It is claimed it will attain a speed of fifteen miles an hour. It is the invention of Mr Scott, jnnr., of Wellington, and will be started on a journey by road to Christchurch to-morrow. A WretchAn old man named Bcmage was committed for trial to-day for criminal assault on his grand daughter, aged nine.
