FERRY ROAD TRAMWAY.

Tho first section of the Ferry road tramway lino was formally opened this morning. At half-past eleven o’clock a tram, consisting of three cars, filled with a number of ladle* and gentlemen who had been invited to be present on the occasion, left Cathedral Square and proceeded to the terminus of the constructed lino near Ollivier’s lane. The journey was accomplished with only a slight hitch, which occurred opposite Lancaster Park, where the engine ran off the line at the points. On leaving the cars tho party, at tho invitation of Mr John Ollivisr, proceeded to tho residence of that gentleman, where preparations on a liberal scale had been made for appropriately celabrating the occasion. A marquee had been erected on the lawn in front of the home, in which refreshments! were provided. Several toasts waro drunk. Mr Ollivior proposed “Tho health of the Tramway Company, coupled with the name of Mr J, E. Brown,” It was a source of satisfaction that the Tramway Company had at last fulfilled their promise to connect the suburb of Woolston with Christchurch by rsil, and ho was personally very much obliged to Mr Brown for having thus afforded him the opportunity of welcoming so many guests on the present occasion. Mr Brown, in responding to the toast, explained that the company were not responsible for tho delay in opening the line, which had been partly attributable to the long time tiken to obtain engines from England, and partly to the difficulty they had met with in completing their

arrangements with the local authorities. It was the inter |bn of the company to conduct the tramway in a manner that would conduce to the public benefit, and at the same time, he hoped, tend to tbe financial success of the undertaking. If the local authorities would not rule and regulate ” them off face of the earth they hoped to do this, B Dtl also to give satisfaction to the people of the district. Mr Brown then proposed the health of their host, Mr Ollivier, remarking that that gentleman was eo much in the habit of being eulogised that it was unnecessary to do so on the present occasion, however much it might be deserved. Mr Ollivier suitably responded and proposed the health of the Mayor of Christchurch, who he said was a thorough good-hoartad Englishman. [Laughter.] Since he had had the honor of being Mayor be had immortalised himself by the liberal manner in which he had performed tbe social duties of the office, and his ball on the previous evening was the most magnificent and successful entertainments of the kind ever given in Christchurch. [Hoar, hear,] Mr Buddenklau responded, and proposed the health of Mrs Ollivier, for which Mr Ollivier returned thanks in a humorous speech. Mr T. Pavitt pioposed “The Hathcote Boad Board,” coupled with the name of the chairman, Mr F, Jones. Mr Jones, in responding, referred to the importance of the work which had just been inaugurated, and to the possibility at no distant period of the Sumner bar being improved so as to allow of the construction of a harbor, which would be connected by rail with the city. Mr Ollivier proposed the health of the Mayor of Dunedin, the Mayor of Sydenham, and the cx-Mayor of Dunedin, all of whom were presented and responded to the toast. This brought the proceedings, which were of a very pleasant description to a close, and the party returned to town by the tram.
