Adelaide wheat,, ex warehouse, remains at 545, New Zealand do at 51s; Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, 57s 6d. Australian tallow is firm, at 42s for best beef, and 45s for best mutton. The Governor of South Australia. A gazette announces that MajorGeneral Sir W. F. D. Jervois, Governor of South Astralia, retires from active military service with the rank of LieutGeneral. BERLIN, April 11. M. Gier’s AppointmentThe appointment of M. de Giers as Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs has been the cause of much rejoicing. The policy of M. Jde Giers, it is confidently expected, will tend to the establishment of greater harmony in the diplomatic relations of Germany and Russia than exists at the present time. YEINNA, April 11. Great satisfaction is expressed at the announcement that Prince GortschakofE retires from active political life, and is succeeded by M. do Giers.
MELBOURNE, April 13. Appointments. The appointments of Messrs Watson and Green to the Department of Railway and Roads is announced in last night s “ Gazette.”

Ho had called a meeting of his creditors for to-morrow, and his affairs are said to be in a dreadfully insolvent state. NELSON, April 13. Attempted SuicideA man named Joseph Coles, a miner, who has resided at Collingwood for some time, is reported to have attempted to commit suicide byj cutting his throat. On Warden Gibbs receiving information, he requested Fletcher to see the man, there being no medical man at Collingwood, and Fletcher sewed up the man’s throat. Coles’ mind is affected. CrimeA man named M. B. McDonald, who recently served three months at Picton for passing valueless cheques, was charged yesterday with two similar offences committed here, and was sentenced in each case to three months’ hard labor, the sentences to be §umulative, PATE A, April 13. Sudden DeathsTwo somewhat sudden deaths occurred here this morning—one being that of Wm. Holmes, late chief clerk in the Crown Lands office, Wellington, where he has a wife and two children. He was temporarily filling Captain Wray’s office. He was seized with an attack of inflammation yesterday and expired this morning. The other case was that of Peter Jaisen, a married man with a family, who also died about the same time from a similar cause. The s s- Patea. The steamer Patea still lies in the same position and is leaking. The cargo is now being taken out. WELLINGTON, April ]3. The Governor. The Hinemoa, with the Governor, arrived at seven this morning. The Governor and the Premier. It is understood that the Governor will have an interview this afternoon with Mr Hall at the latter’s residence. It is understood that some of the Ministers have had an interview with his Excellency on official business. Nothing, however, has transpired. DUNEDIN, April 13. The Arson Case. The Crown Prosecutor adopted the suggestion of the Judge in Waldemann’s case, and withdrew the second indictment from the jury pending the decision of the Appeol Court on the points reserved. FireA three-roomed cottage in Castle street, occupied by William Swanson, wes burned down this morninsr. It was insured in the National for £l5O on the building and £SO on the furniture.
