The Cormorant arrived with her flag halfmast high. She reports that she visited Espiritu Santo on the 16th Match, while engaged in the search for the murderers concerned in the massacre of the boat’s crew of the Isabella. Before daylight a detachment under Lieutenant Luokraft disembarked through a fearful surf. They were guided by a native to a small island, and reaching a village captured two women. The rest were disturbed by the barking of dogs, and plunged at once into thickets and opened fire. Luokraft rushed on firing, and was mortally wounded. The natives retired further inland, and the detachment retired. Luokraft died before reaching the ship. The natives fired down on the party from a high cliff.

ADELAIDE, April 5

The Government returns show the yield from the late harvest to be only 125,000 tons of wheat for export. Shipments and engagements to date amount to 95,000 tons, leaving about 30,000 ton# to be exported during the remaining nine months of the year. The prisoners already committed for the insurance fraud on the Mutual Assurance Company were further committed for trial for attempted fraud on the Australian Alliance.
