ProvidentialA warder named Binnsy and a prisoner named Paget had a narrow escape drowning in the harbor last night. They were taking stores to the prison hulk, when they were met by a squall, and the boat sank. The warder conld swim, and the prisoner seized a hoi and they drifted down the harbor, and after being in the water an hour and a half, they landed on Goat Island greatly distressed. EarthquakeA smart shock of earthquake was felt at Queenstown this morning.

[FROM THE “ PRESS.”] WELLINGTON, April 4. The San Francisco mail per City of New York was transhipped into the Penguin, which left Mannkau at 11 am. to-day for Wellington, via Taranaki. She is expected to arrive here early to-morrow evening, and the Hawea will be detained to tike on the Canterbury and Otago portions of the mail The Hawea will start directly after the arrival of the Penguin, and will uae every effort to cateb the Dunedin express.
