EXHIBITION SPORTS COMMITTEE.
The adjourned meeting of the above committee was held on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Mayor occupied the chair. 'the following correspondence was read : From Mr Back, stating that it had been arranged to run excursion trains during the Exhibition to various parts of the district at the uniform rate of 5s for first class and 3s for second class.
Mr Louisson suggested that the Government should bo asked to make the same concession from tha various districts to Christchnrcb as well as from Christchurch to the districts named. This would enable the country residents to visit the Exhibition far more frequently than would otherwise be the case. He would move " That the Railway Department be thanked for the letter, and asked to extend the concession of excursion trains from tho various places of interest in the district to Christchurch alternately with those from Christchurch." Mr N. Black seconded the resolution, which was carried.
A letter was read from the musical committee, forwarding particulars of the prizes which they proposed to award for musical performances, amounting to £ 20. Mr Walton explained that the sum of £SO for the best band in the contest was intended to be divided into £25 for a prize, and £25 for the travelling expenses '1 he private concerts were on a different basis, an a charge could be made, which could not be done with regard to the band contests. Messrs Joubert and Twopeny intended to provide piano, gas, and room, for the use of the committee. After some further discussion Mr Thomson moved—" That it be an instruction to the musical committee to request Messrs Joubert and Twopeny to impose an extra fee of 6d for each person attending the special concerts and band contests." Mr Walton seconded the motion, which was agreed to.
The report of the friendly societies committee was read and received. It recommended that the general committee be asked to grant passes to the bands and Maoris coming to the procession.
Mr Thomson reported, on behalf of the collection committee, that some £SOO had been collected. The allocation committee had arranged to give the follow'ng sums: —Grand National Steeplechase, £SO; citizen's ball, £l5O, as guarantee; athletic sports, guarantee, £150; musical committee, £IOO ; pigeon match, £lO 103 ; bicycle race, £25 ; football match, £25 ; fire brigade, £25; coursing, £25; friendly societies' procession, £4O. This would total up £6OO, eo that they had about £.OO yet to get. Tho oi'tmnitteo had to decline to allocate any money to the Regatta or the Papanui Steeplechase, as they had no money to do so. Tho various amounts mentioned by Mr Thompson werothen discussed seriatim On the item for the musical committee, £IOO, Mr Walton suggested that it should be increased to £155. He suggested that the subscriptionHit should be published, as he found some persons who wero going to reap a rich harvest out of tha influx of population only subscribed a guinea or two guineas. He thought if the names of these gentlemen were published they would be ashamed to see their names in print for so small a sum. He only asked for this increase of £55 in case the funds cams in.
Mr Hobdon suggested that a second prizi of ,£?5 should bo given. With this understanding he was willing to second the resolution of Mr Walton.
Mr Walton accepted this and the motion was carried.
Tho Bum of £lO 10s proposed for the pigeon match was struck out on a division.
Mr Superintendent Harris explained, on the item referring to the Fire Brigado, that tho eum of £SO applied for was only intended to supplement the sum of £SO or £75 to bo found by the brigade. To get up such a show as they desired would cost quite £'.2o. Mr Pratt moved—" That the sum granted to the Fire Brigado be increased to £50."
Mr Leahy seconded tho motion, which was carried. Some discussion ensued on the item for the coursing meetings, but ultimately it was agreed to.
The remainder of the amounts were passed. Mr Nowby moved—" That a sub committee of two he appointed to canvass the remaining wards of Christchurch," which was agreed to, and Mr Newby and Mr Black appointed. Tho Mayor said it would bo seen that it was impossible to grant any money to tho regatta, nor to tho Papanui Steeplechase Club, on account of want of funds. Mr Walton moved—" That the list of all subscriptions to tho Sports and Entertainment Fund above and inclusive of a guinea, be published in detail." Mr Black secocded tho motion.
